It looks like the furore over the charges for the P800 SDK may be having an effect. According to The Register in this article a version of the UIQ SDK will be made available for free. This version will not inlcude the Metrowerks RAD IDE program, and is most beneficial to Linux users (thought the Gnupoc project).
Good news all round it seem. And with Symbian set to release a Java only version of the SDK as well it seems like development for the P800 may be looking up.
Looks like sanity may prevail.
And I thought companies like Sony didn't listen to the little guy. Perhaps Sony and Ericsson take shifts at being in charge and it's now Ericsson's shift.

Just as an aisde someone from SE reads this site (actually several someones according to the logs). Maybe some saw your earlier post 😉
Im an OPL develloper. Im in the start pit for bying the new SE P800 but I would like to run my old OPL programs on it like I do on my series 5. I wonder if this SDK will make it possible in any way. Or if Symbian is going to make a OPL runtime for the P800 as they did for the 92X0.
AFAIK Symbian said that OPL was for Crystal only (i.e. the 92x0). However I for one believe that this is a mistake and will keep my fingers crossed.
IMO I think that unless Symbian see a groundswell of support for OPL on he web(and I'm atalkina t least 100-150 apps if not more) then 92x0 will be the last OPL enabled machine.
For the 7650 and P800 you' have to convince them even more because you couldn't really write on the device, so a major plus point to OPL is lost. MNind you, they let teh Revo go like that as well.
If you want OPL on devices, you need to use it, show your support, and tell the world. Tough life, isn't it.
If Symbian no longer wants to support OPL might it be an idea to try and persudate them to Open Source it?
If they did would there be enough interested developers with the required skills to support it?
Might this lead to new areas OPL, on Palm or Pocket PC for intstance 😉
Andy
I sent a nice letter to Symbian about P800:
Will there be a OPL runtime for the SE P800? I have several older OPL programs that I am using on my series5. Im planing on bying a SE P800 and was thrilled that it is using Symbian (epoc)release 7.
When will the runtime get out fore me to download? If it will.
If it will not where can I get my hand on the c++ files to try to adapt it to fit the p800?
If there will be no more OPL support What are you surgesting that I should be starting to use that is as powerful and simple as OPL?
I hope they will answer my letter.
P.S. I was the guest user. 8) D.S.

1. I think there are already more than 150 OPL apps on the Web for 92xx.
2. The argument that OPL is only for keyboard devices is nonsense. Just look at Netpad. Most apps that I have seen for the Netpad are in OPL.
3. But I agree with your last notion. We need to make our voice heard.
Martin,
150 OPL apps on the net for 9210? I'd love to believe that, but given Rafe has a pretty definitive list of software on AAE and it's around 200 entries, of which 20 are OPL either (a) Rafe has a huge blind spot or (b) you're couning C++ and Java apps in that 150.
PLEASE prove me wrong!
But yes, voices needed to be heard. Any suggestions?
OPL-Stock '02 Is what is required. We can hire the Birmingham NEC (or maybe somewhere more realistic), and do it like a demo party, could start on a saturday at 9am and end the sunday at 9pm, or maybe on a Bank Holiday Monday. In which we would run competitions like Demo production, Game Programming, the good old 24hour compo. The 9210 can interface with an overhead projector so all the apps coded can be shown on a big screen for everyone to see..... Goodness knows what could be supplied for prizes, maybe free lollipops. An event like that could double the amount of OPL apps available overnight. We do OPL workshops for newbies etc etc. The list is endless. Then after the party, host all the apps as .sis files for free download and then Symbian will think "Maybe there are OPL coders out there still."
Then again I may just be waffling.
I'd turn up and enter for the sake of winning a lollipop, WOW! Say a 10 entry fee for each person coming (or more to cover costs of hall hire and prizes).

Hmm, maybe I was too quick on that one. I intended to include OPL only of course. I would be surprised if it as low as 20 though, since the RMR apps would then be almost half of it.
One major milestone I think is to ensure availability of an anti-RevTran tool so that people can protect their developments. I have not yet heard of a RevTran port for ER6 Crystal, but it's a matter of time.
The only thing I can say for sure is that me and my team are committed to OPL for 92xx and hope to release a few apps very soon. Previously we have only done OPL developments for industrial customers and we never got around to release products. We're also offering a OPL ER6 porting service.
We have tweaked WINS so that we can use ER6 OPL within the Series 7 type VGA skin which is much more productive than the smallish 92xx one.
cheers
Martin
what we need is an OpenOPL 😊
