goodbye Nokia

I have used Nokia phones for over 10 years and have used a Communicator since '96. However I can no longer be loyal to Nokia.

The 9210i is stone age. It doesn't support

MMS
Bluetooth

Also it doesnt have a camera

With the new UK mobile phone/driving laws I cannot continue to use my 9210 in the car and all the handsfree kits look rubbish.

I have seen TomToms sat nav software running on a XDA and it totally blew me away. I have to stop kidding myself and dump the 9210.

Nokia have ignored the Communicator market for too long. They should have spent time/recourses on the business market and leave handheld gaming to Nintendo.

The only question is what to get next?

So you blame nokia for spending time in games, but you complain that your phone doesn't have a camera? how weird is that? It's a phone. anything else is nice, but not nescesary.

Most people here are just plain impatient. Switching phones faster than clothes, and stil complaining that it's not going fast enough. Try to slow down and actually enjoy something.

😮

I agree with ashby.The Communicator is outdated.It doesn't have today's standards like Bluetooth or GPRS.I don't think that a built-in camera is a requirement,a touchscreen maybe 😃

i was considering of buying a 9210i. but after reading this thread i'm now having second thoughts. i'm currently using 7650 and i have grown tired of using the phone. i thought 9210i would be an interesting phone than the new 6600. i now trying to choose from both of them. help me!!!!😊

There are better Series 60 alternatives then the 6600.Sendo X or the Seimens SX1 maybe. If you are a power PDA user, try the Sony Ericsson P900.If you can wait a while, maybe until March next year Nokia might surprise you with a Communicator successor.

hell i was using 7650 last year and i thought 9210i would be better. so i bought it on february this year.

but yeah the screen much much better but the availaibility of the softwares is very limited!!!

no GPRS this makes me use my friend dial up account 😃 and it is very slow unless ur operator got HSCSD

so my advice don't buy 9210i this year

buy 6600 or P900 as Ghostdog said

I think a few things are overlooked, firstly, how many people really use MMS? 4? 5 maybe? Bluetooth, I don't see any real need for, people I know with bluetooth kit have so much hastle making it all talk to each other. Camera? It comes with a camera, is that not good enough, is having a camera built in somehow vastly different? Yes the camera is sort of handy, but again barely used by most people. The 9210 still does the job it was designed for better than anything else on the market, and still will until a successor is released.

I agree with SwitchBlade. Camera would be fun, but only as a toy. I don't need it - and probably, if I needed a camera, I would not be content with the built in ones anyway. But I do wish there was GPRS.

I'll wait for the next communicator and use my old one up till then.

I agree that a camera and MMS are not something crucial, but Bluetooth and GPRS?I would never buy a bluetooth-less device.

BTW:I never had any trouble setting up bluetooth, people should RTM more often.

I'm a business user and every time I get all envious about some new phone I remind myself about the Communicator's keyboard. I cannot imagine a better input to write all sorts of stuff be it SMS, essays etc. Sure, I'm no longer get excited about my phone but then again that's how it is I suppose with anything you take for granted but just goes about doing what you need it to do without much problems!

But I am concerned about some software which I expected Nokia or Symbian would have come up with by now. I used to use a Psion 5 and they had Data which was a more advanced version of Notes. Being able to embed objects in Notes who be great.

All in all, having used the 9210 for nearly three years is a statement in itself.

I am using Comm for more than 1 year. I find it useful to serve my needs i.e keeping track of my emails and fax msgs, words and spreadsheet, storing photos using IAlbum, MP3 songs using MP3Go, keeping records using Code Vault, Advance English Dictionary, Calender for keeping appointments etc, Converter, recording tel conversations etc. I use 128MB card for storage. Using keypads is much more easier and faster than using touch screen. Anyway I agree with u that Comm shd have MMS, GPRS, Bluetooth & camera. I am waiting for a new version. As for now I am happy with it & it serves my needs espacially as a businessman.

YES, I totally agree that 9210 is badly outdated in terms of features and technologies.

Guess what? The amazingly useful and functional KEYBOARD is the only thing that keeps me from changing to other Phone cum PDA options.

Sorry, I just have so much trouble using the stylus, grafitti and hand writing recognition. Yes, all have virtual keboard but my eyes are too old for that kind of strain.

I have been playing with all the latest P900, XDA II, Treo 600 and what have you... my final decision is to wait for the 9210 successor that definitely still comes with a keyboard.

But I am disappointed by Nokia indifference in solving some PC Suite problem to connect to 9210 using IRDA.

Hope to see a preview of the new communucator in the Cebit 2004 in March 2004.

I've changed from 9210 to P900 and I'm very happy with it. The only thing I miss is (obviously) the keyboard but the smaller size, GPRS and Camera more than make up for this.

I find using the on screen keyboard acceptable but can't get used to JOT. I may try an external keyboard but for the amount of text input I actually do I'm not sure if I need it. T9 is great with the flip closed but its a shame you can use so few applications in this mode e.g. Why can you use T9 to create an SMS but not an Email?

Thanks to GPRS, WAP and Web browsing are a lot more pleasurable. I'm even using it for E-mail more than I did on my 9210 because its just one click to quckly send and recieve mail.

The smaller size really does make a difference. I often left my 9210 at home in the evening because it was so bulky but I carry the P900 all the time in my trouser pocket (my 9210 was normally in my jacket). I actually find reading e-books one handed on a bus very practicable and useful.

Oh and the last big advantage is the vibrate mode 😉

If you can live without the keyboard and are prepared to use 3rd party office apps (if you need them) then I'd say the P900 is a great replacement for the 9210.

Welcome to the P900 camp, Andy! 😊

I've never found Jot comfortable either, even after using the P800 a year before... If you have good eye-sight and aim, the virtual keyboard is faster anyway. With Jot you have to draw each letter, but with the keybard you just need one tap on each letter, so the actual pen movement distance from letter to letter will be less in most cases.

I also agree that the apps in "Flip Closed mode" are far to basic. The good thing though, is that it is possible to write an app to work in FC mode, but it would require quite alot of time and skill because it isn't well documentet, if at all. I remember Jordan once saying something like; "Wouldn't it be great if it could run Series 60 in FC mode, and UIQ in FO"... 😃

OI, U should take a good long look at when Nokia 1st introduced a 9210 it was miles ahead of the competition! it takes time developing all these new features into a phone!

I've said it before and i'ii say it again - there is no phone in the world that challenges the 9210i- thats a fact!

Its the simply the best tool for the job for the SERIOUS business MAN/WOMEN- wonder what 99% of business travellers on Heathrow Express use? Yes the 9210i!

I rest my case!

Nothing is ever gonna please people like u! If it had BT/ Camera u'll b complainin about somethin else, its size/ battery life/ picture quality etc... If u owned a Ferrari u'll b complain about lack of space/ petrol comsumption, the list goes on

9210i does what it does better than anything else! Thats a fact!- prove me wrong and i'ii b ur best friend!

Nah, Nokia have all the necessary technology available, and should have had a new commie out ages ago. It's just marketing, the big bucks are in the simple, cheap mobile phones, and the "imaging" phones like the 7650/3650/6600 and other non-Symbian camera phones.

It was just pathetic that they didn't implement GPRS into the 9210i. It was also pathetic that they didn't make their "serious business tool" a tri/quad-band phone. I would definitely have gotten a 9210i if it had GPRS. I've been using GPRS heavily for years, and just couldn't live without it.

Basically, like it's been mentioned before in this thread, the only thing the Communicator's got going for itself is the keyboard. Everything else is just pretty much low tech by now. Not enough RAM, slow processor, no stereo sound output, no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi support etc. etc... There's alot to complain about, and alternatives are definitely out there, as long as you are willing to sacrifice that precious keyboard.

With that said, I can't wait to see the new commie when (if!) it comes out. But even if it has all the features I could wish for, would it replace my P900? I'm not sure. I've come think that the P900 is the perfect compromise between size and function, phone and PDA. It's size/weight makes it comfortable enough to carry around wherever, and it fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. Which brings me to another function I'm not sure I could do without - the Jog Dial. It's just so useful when browsing the web, reading news and documents etc. Still it is far from perfection, it still should've had more RAM and better memory expansion possibilities.

Well anyway, it'll certainly be interesting to see what the future brings, in terms of hybrid devices. 😊

If you needed to buy a PDA/Smarthone at the moment, what would you get?A p900 or a Communicator?

I would certainly go for the p900,but that is just me.

Iam a business user who cannot give up the 9210 I have a car kit that is excellent.
I tried replacing this with a p800 with blutooth headset but it was so unreliable (the bluetooth connection) and I need the fax on the 9210.
I too cant believe Nokia are ditching this model
the main things I miss are triband and easy image handling.
I have broadband at home and work but feel gprs would be an expensive luxury, is it worth it?
I am still using the communicator and the p800 has a pay as you go sim and is used evenings and when i need the camera!

All,

Yes, and hope that Nokia will also improve the reception on the new communicator.

The 9110, 9210 & 9210i has been consistently out performed by any other mobile phones in terms of reception. Everytime my 9210i rings, I have to pick it up and walk to the nearest window before I can start talking. With most other phones, I do not need to do that.

Sean

Unfortunatly i must agree with you the nokia 9210i is old had.
I have had 8 diffrent nokia phones over the last 9 years the last 3 being 9110, 9210e, 9210i but unfornuatly without a bluetooth utility i have been forced to upgrade to a p900.
The p900 is a great phone but i do miss a qwerty keyboard as in the 9210i. Sorry Nokia but you have to move with the times.
