I am using a 9290 in the USA. Most SMTP servers require that you authenticate in order to send outbound mail. THe Nokia messaging software does not have an option to authenticate therefore you cannot send outgoing mail. Nokia has confirmed that this is a limitation in their messaging software. ANyone know of a third party software or a workaround for this problem? I have tried Active Mail but that does not offer the authentication option either. Thanks..
Mail Authentication
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't it enough if you first download your headers from your account and then you should be able to send messages via your SMTP server. It works at least for me for my GMX account.
I don't think the mail software in the 92x0 can do SMTP authentication...my brother has long complained that he can't send mail from his 9210 because of this.
The only solution I can think of is to look for an SMTP server that doesn't require authentication....not that that would be the easiest thing to do...
Interestingly, the 9110 seemed to suffer from the same problem as well...I can't believe Nokia still hasn't fixed this issue.
EPOC Mail on the psion's also doesn't allow SMTP Authentication either so this wouldn't surprise me. I recon an SSH client should cure that. Or maybe an email to Cibinex for Active Mail.
Hmms I've always found that I needed to authenticate to receive my e-mail but could send mail without any authentication. Either that's normal in the UK or I just happened to use some odd isps.
most of the current smtp servers only check your IP. Especially those from your isp.
Some other free smtp server will tend to ask for authorisation.

This was true with the "old" internet, but the rise of spammers forced most ISPs and corporations to disabling relaying. Say you were using an SMTP server at foo.com. Any email to bar, biz, or [email protected] would go through, while anything outside of that domain would be blocked due to denied relaying.
Bummer.
There is a Java app called SmtpAuth that allows SMPT Authentication from the standard Email application in Psion PDAs. I use it on my netBook and it works perfectly.
Has anyone tried the same Java code on the 9210?

At this point I only know how to do it in a Psion. But it should not be too different from the Nokia 9210. After all the Email/Messaging application in both machines are very closely related. I am personally not very strong in Java, I am more into OPL and my team are all C++, and this needs a bit of Java tweaking.
I am in touch with the author, but he is a bit busy right now and he does not have a 9210. But I am hopeful that we'll get there.
Don't forget the free developers version of
the 9200. He doesn't need a phone, just
a few hundred megs on his harddrive.
