I havn't actually gone down and varified it, but according to

There is a working one at a Carphone Warehouse in London. I'm not sure if it is the final version of it, or a prerelease one for display purposes.

One concern I've had from the pics and videos I've seen is that the colour looked washed out. The thread above implies this is still the case. Anyway, apparently it crashed after being used for 2-3 mins. so hopefully it is a prerelease and the final one will be better.

I can't see it being put on display, unless release is at most a few weeks away.

I guess it's going to be choosing time for me soon, P800 or Sony Clie

Hmm...I'm in the same boat, having to make a choice. But, if the P800 isn't FAST - I won't bother with it. It seems to have loads going for it spec-wise, but I wonder if the CPU is rated fast enough to make it a really nimble device? I won't forget the low memory and slow CPU speed of the Nokia 9210 and the not very great phone earpiece - not good at all. I expect to press a button and get an instant response!
Symbian OS is SUPERB, but if it doesn't have the right hardware spec behind it - forget it.

At the moment I'm hoping the P800 will be the one, but failing that I'll check out the HP Jornada 928 Pocket PC, and various bluetooth mobile handset / seperate PPC Bluetooth combinations.

It's intresting how peoples' mobile needs change. Some people want more and more mobile-to-MS Office connectivity. I'm going in totally the opposite direction. I think editing Word DOC's on a mobile device is very over-rated and synchronising files with creative content is something best avoided (it's an added complication and annoyance...even between a Notebook and Desktop). I see my essential mobile needs as phone, calender, contacts, note-taking (with occasional email). I'll leave the document creation to my notebook on a desktop.

The iSync possibilities of the P800 with Apple OSX look very useful. Guess we'll only know for sure what to go for when we see it for ourselves 😉

Actually, I am not particularly into editing Word, Excel on small PDA screens.

The reason I am tempted by the Sony Clie, it it has a 320 x 480. Actually makes Web surfing and Word Excel files a much more practicle proposition like on the 9210i.

Anyway, I'm actually in London tomorrow, so if I get a chance I'll pop into the Carphone Warehouse and take a look at it.

Actualy ive used the Palm & the nokia 9210 & i do a lot of excel work on mine. i like carrying my import costings on my phones.
This is because our import suty structure is very complicated. & the 9210 is prefect. i get a lot of rows on the screen. all the unwanted calculations i have put below & i change one number & i neatly get my figure on the cell on the screen.
Even word documnets, i love using them. But as someone said, the document is more used for taking short notes rather than actually typing out letters etc.
I use to to Fax Sometimes (once in a month maybe)
Im personally looking fwd to buying the P800.

Someone please let me know as soon as its on sale in London, my brother is going to be there in a week & i can tell him to buy it.

thanks

I just couldn't see myself using a standard Palm screen for anything with more than a couple of rows and columns.

Anyway, back to the P800.

Went London to attend a wedding.
Slipped out and caught the Tube.
Located the Carphone Warehouse in question.

And !!!!

They had the unit in yesterday, and will have it again Tuesday, but it wasn't available today.
Just my bl**dy luck.

Anyway, it is only a demo unit, and the guy reckons we are looking at late October before these things are on the shelves. Not as soon as I would have liked, and I'm not sure if I can wait around that long. At least, it looks like the December rumour is out of the picture.

One thing I did manage to do, is play with a couple of Sony Clie NR70s, very nice, Wonderful screen and OK keyboard (Better than I expected).
Really liked the switchable Tablet/Clamshell option.
When I first read about it, I thought switching between the two modes would be too much hassle, but it is extremely quick.

You can open the case, flip the screen round and put it into tablet format in maybe 2-3 seconds max. Likewise for doing the reverse.
The unit is a bit tall, but very thin and would fit into a trouser pocket quite comfortably (i'e' stand up, sit down without noticing it). I don't think any unit is suitable for a shirt pocket, and this one is too tall. Cool design.

I made the pilgrimage to CarphoneW in Oxfrod street NEXT to John lewis and played with the P800. I have been using PDAs for a long time and started with Sharp pen based PDAs and the first Newton+Alcatel one touch com, PocketPC, Palm, Psion, 9000-9210 and finally it looks like the device I have been waiting for.

The screen is a little dimmer than the 7650 but is still a great screen, clean and clear, looked good in daylight still easy to read. The speed is good one thing that was really nice were no memory errors popping up. Since largest executable memory on the 3-48x pcs to Heap Memory on my Newton to squeezing every last bit of free space on my 9210 to get apps to run.

I started buy playing a few clips on the packetvideo player, very nice defiantly cleaner than video clips on the 9210 fast and clear, over to the camera snap a few shots, I basically went down the menu with the jog wheel opening everything and never closing anything and its was fast and happy. The bottom of the list was Stunt car racer and if any of you remember that classic game you have never seen it looking so good. Nice solid polygons fast refresh a great game, this and MIB II games are shipped with the unit.

The weight is good and size feels, for my hands at least, perfect. The clip out pen is a little fiddly but its a solution created by necessity, the thumb nail worked fine while holding it in one hand, the solution I think I would adopt when I have my own unit.

For me it finally pulls together the things I want out of a handheld device, I have three different Pocket devices and the spend most of there time sat in the draw or my bag, a 9210, great device but still a little two big and heavy. I have always loved the Nokia Communicator devices and would have been happy to stay with Nokia but after using the two devices and the 7650 limitations on memory there is no comparison. If price is an issue then maybe there is as the P800 looks set to be at least a 100-pound more than the 7650 but for me well worth it. It looks and feels a mature product with a good finish it has the features and the support to carry it until its time to move over for future devices, but for now, in my view its the best you can get.

Went down to the Carphone Warehouse to see for myself. The guy there was very friendly and was more than happy to show me the unit. The one they have is a very early demo unit and froze up a few times during the demo.

In general I was quite impressed, although I think I already knew what to expect. The screen was good, even with the backlighting off and the unit was a little smaller than you expect. The response seemed quick and a test of the handwriting recognition showed that it was comparable to that on PPC devices like the IPaq.

I had a look at the video playback which was impressive to see on a phone. I also had a quick game of Stunt Car Extreme which was very hard to play (or maybe I'm just bad at it). It was not quite as smooth as I hoped, but comparable to the days of Stunt Car Racer on the Atari ST.

He told me that it was probably going to be out next month and the price (with a contract) would likely be in the region of 400. I guess it's not so bad, I just won't eat for a month!

Marc

hello,
what is the kind of control of the Stunt Car Extreme game ?
Do we have to touch the screen to go left and right or do we have to use the jog wheel ? is it user friendly ?
The problem is that i don't really hunderstand how easy it will be to play some games since there is no arrows or little joystick at the bottom ot the phone.

I used to have an IPaq, and due to a design flaw in the way its D-Pad worked, loads of games used the touch screen for control instead. Depends on the type of game etc. but I found it worked quite well.

Although I got bored with the whole screen protector thing after a while, for heavy gaming it would be advisable.

I went to Oxford street and played with the p800.. here are my impressions:
- lovely design. Same size as the nokia but *feels* smaller.
- Light (in weight)
- Nice screen
- Quick (much quicker than t68i).. A small delay when opening and closing the flip as it switches display. Also a small delay when looking up contacts but similar to a palm. Definitely not an issue imho
- flimsy/crappy stylus that will be lost v. quickly
- Interface was not as intuitive as I hoped. I was a bit confused at times on how to navigate and stuff which was a bit of a disappointment
- Lack of screen cover - DUMB (covered in another post)
- Salesperson thought it would sell for 500 w/o contract and 350 w/contract but couldnt confirm as it hasnt been loaded
- You can have priority ordering from them for 10 (ie. once they have come in, they will put one aside and contact you). due "mid-october"

all in all, i am impressed. this is the only thing that works as a pda/phone combo. i didnt have time to pre-order but i am going to!!

if you have any questions, then post them and i will respond. i didnt try video or the camera as it doesnt interest me (i am looking primarily for a pda/phone combo)

I'm from italy and i would like to preorder the phone from the shop that you are talking about, what is its website?
