Remove "My P800" from desktop

I hope this hasn't been asked before, if it has my searching technique needs brushing up.

I have just reinstalled the SE PC Suite and I have decided I don't want to see the "My P800" icon on my desktop (XP Pro BTW).

Unfortunately, I cannot work out how to remove it (deleting it doesn't work) and now it's getting on my nerves.

Can anyone let me know if it is possible, and if so how?

XP Pro will eventually flag it as unused and suggest removing it (if you don't use it). Alternatively if you can't wait, I suggest you download the TweakUI powertoy from the Windows XP downloads site (XP Pro Powertoys downloads page ). Its a free download.
TweakUI will allow you to remove the icon from the desktop (without uninstalling it), as well as allowing other useful bits and pieces for tweaking XP.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried running the cleanup wizard, but it was unable to remove the icon (this is the technique I have used successfully before).

I shall try your other suggestion as soon as I get home - it sounds promising (and there are some other nifty downloads there like the virtual desktop manager).

it's quite simple if you want to do it. Don't mess with it unless you have worked with regedit before, otherwise, you could cause hairs to come out of XP's ears or your computer to drop dead.

run regedit,

go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\Namespace

You will find a subdirectory there with a number inside { }

Go down through the list until you find the one where the default data (on the right pane) says "My P800".

You can rename it here or delete the entire leaf to remove it from your desktop.

You can also move it (that's what I did) to be inside "my computer" by cutting the leaf and pasting the entire key at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\Namespace

Good luck.
