If I purchased the P800 I would be interested is using it as a combined mobile phone, PDA and digital music player. As a phone and PDA it looks impressive but not so as a music player
The XDA and Z100 look better in this respect as they use SD. SD is currently available in 512 but looks set to be manufactured in 1G and eventually 4G version.
Compare that with the current 128 Mb memory capacity of memory stick. I don't think this looks set to be increased in the immediate future either. I am surprised that Sony hasn't tried to keep up with the capacity improvements with other formats.
Any comments?
Well, its a mis-conception that the P800 uses memory sticks, because it doesn't. It uses Sony's new Memory stick DUO, they are very similar, but smaller than a standard memory stick.
The largest memory stick Duo is only 64MB, so you'd have to buy a lot of them to make it worth using as a portable music solution.
Still, you can get about an album of songs onto 64MB, and with the memory stick duo adaptor, you can easily and quickly transfer files onto it.

How many memorysticks slots does it have?
/tn
Just the one...... At the moment, the limit is 128Mb, but Sony won't stick with that (geddit? stick!? Har! Har!)
PS. Whenever I hear someone say "just the one", am I the only one here wants to finish it off with "Mrs. Wembley"?
Just the one Mrs. Wembley?
No. The limit for MEMORY STICK DUO is 64Mb. Memory stick duo comes in denominations of 8MB/16MB/32MB and 64MB nothing higher at the moment.
Standard memory sticks do go up to 128MB, these do not.

Nope, I thought the exact same thing as soon as read your words.
has anyone ever seen a memorystick duo 16mb for sale let alone a 64mb one? there used to be a funky memorystick roadmap floating about which showed the Duo eventually reaching capacities of 1Gb by 2004.
I found this in the google cache... roadmap
If you go to http://www.memorystick.org/msinfo/eng/mscon/roadmap.html
you will see that sony is updating the roadmap....
Not so good for the delay
You honestly expecting to be still using your P800 in 2004? By then it'll be outdated junk. Although It would be nice to see 1GB Memory Stick Duo's incorporated into the SE P1000 or whatever it may be.
I expect i'll still be using it in 2004 cos i probably wont get my hands on one til 2003 the way things are going! That's if I still want one by 2003 being a fickle git?
I don't care.. i always have phones atleast 3 years.. cuz i'm not a gadget freak, But i realy got to get mt hands on the p800 😃
I just read a review on this in one of the mobile phone magazine and it stated that although duo memory sticks will be available in sizes above 64Mb the limit on this device will be 64Mb.
Anybody know otherwise?
I think 64mb is more than enough for a Phone, the only real reason you may need more is if you want to carry lots of MP3's around.
I personally won't be using the P800 for music. As it can do far greater things. 😃
