Does anybody know of a application for encrypting the data on the P900 and memory sticks?

There are a few apps such as HandySafe. Click on the "Shop" link at the top of the page and then search in there.

I wouldn't recommend actually encrypting all the data on the phone, because I think things like Contacts and Agenda may break if you try that!

I agree with Bassey; HandySafe is pretty good and also has it's own sync to PC and Windows software so you can maintain a private database both on phone and PC.

Hmmm, I would disagree as this approach has been successfully done on Palm devices. If you use the P900 as a corporate tool then you would want all your contact information and calendar encrypted.

Like Tracker has a OS hook for when the default menu screen opens, couldnt something be implemented so that when a particular file type is opened a decrypt screen appears?

Keep in mind that, unlike a Palm, no-one can use your P900 without a SIM card and that requires the PIN. You can also lock your P900 so that it requires a password to use it at all. The only way to get around this is to take the battery out and then you need the SIM card's PIN to start it up again.

Bassey, couldn't you use another SIM? If so you are not protecting data at all.

My Revo had Freecrypt on it that could encrypt/decrypt any document. It was from freepoc.org and having just checked I see the author has ER5/Communicator/Source code versions. For UIQ author has done a Java version, but I haven't tested that.

However F-Secure have software called FileCrypto that does what you want can encrypt files on phone and on memorystick. It's not that cheap (58 or $64.24 per license) for a small app, but for corporates who need the security looks ideal.

There is an evaluation version, and the site only talks about the P800 - so (a) I haven't used it, and (b) I'm just assuming it will work fine with P900.

Nix

Took these from F-secure site - seems to run in background and so allows decrypt when opening certain filetypes e.g. from within Handyday

Absolutely right. <SOUND OF HEAD BEING BANGED AGAINST BRICK WALL>. Oops.

There's another solution to this problem. Why not download FreeSafe?

FreeSafe "0.2.5" was released to the public on 4th September 2004. FreeSafe offers military grade encryption for passwords stored on your Sony Ericsson P800, P900 and other Java compatible phones. Download the new version from here:-

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freesafe

As the name suggests, FreeSafe is public domain software and won't cost you a penny. The Encryption algorithm used is 192-bit Twofish.
