I think I know why 3 may be protecting phones in such a dumb way...

I've signed up with 3 and got a Motorola A920 but when looking at how much restrictions are in place on 3 I'm beginning to wish I'd stuck with a Nokia from O2 or Vodafone instead.

But I might have figured out why 3 don't want people installing 3rd party apps on the phones. 'Cos if they limit it to only being able to run their apps then it means you gotta buy the apps off them. Most games that are available for the phone have to be bought at a rate of 50p a day whereas the free Symbian apps on the internet don't cost anything and 3 don't get a penny from that. Probably also the same reason why they've restricted the internet to only their sites as well and not full WAP access. 😞

This is stupid though 'cos this whole thing would be like you going and buying a TV which becomes your property and then BBC blocking all other broadcasters out 'cos they want everyone watching their programmes and paying them money and then coming up with some lame excuse like "We don't want people to be able to watch other channels 'cos they might be show bad pictures that could damage the TV".
