I've tried to reboot my pc. I've tried to reinstall the n-gage drivers on my pc but the damn thing still won't show as a mass storage device on my pc. I don't see any probs with my usb cable and I've run out of ideas as to what I can do next to get my n-gage to show up. Can anyone else think of something else I could try???😕
Re: Another quick query
what windows do you have?
If its win 98 then teathing problems are expected.
I will give you a list of things to check.
1. Do you have any other usb device running
2. Have you got the latest drivers for you motherboard or usb pci card
3.When you insert n-gage does it detect the device and try to install drivers or not.
4.if you have installed pc suite then unistall it this for some reason causes problems in win98.
5.I know this is unlikely but do you have a way to test the cable
6.have you got an mmc card in n-gage
7.can the n-gage read the mmc
8 have you got your n-gage on when you plug it into computer
9 if you have win 98 is it the second edition or the first(forgot to ask earlier)
10.How competent are you with computers(to gage how much jargon i can use)
pm me or leave message here.
Shadow12,
In answer to your q's:
I am running win98SE. I have tried connecting my phone via usb with and without other usb devices attached to the pc. All drivers on my pc are uptodate. After uninstalling the n-gage drivers on my pc it will then reinstall drivers but still won't show up as a mass storage device in My Computer folder. I don't have PC Suite installed. There is nothing wrong with the usb cable. I am using the original mmc card that came with my n-gage (it used to have flo snowboarding on it till I wiped it off). There is no probs with the n-gage reading the mmc. The n-gage is switched on when I attempt to connect it to the pc.
I am fairly good with computers so you can blast me with as much jargon as you want.
are you sure that you installed the USB drivers? beause Win98 will need drivers...
Yes I'm sure the drivers are installed!
i have windows XP but i have other usb ports in use... is that the whole reason why it cant detect my N-gage when i double click removable drives, because i've taken care of all the other items listed
the n-gage is supposed to be on when you plug it in tothe usb right? or at least it doesn't matter, correct?
It is best to have the n-gage switched on when u connect it to the pc via usb. I don't think anything would happen if it was switched off (although I must admit I've not tried it.)
I don't know if disconnecting the rest of your usb devices from your pc and then trying to connect your n-gage. Unfortunately I'm no good with Win XP.
The usb port I use has been split so I can attach 4 usb cables at once using one original usb port. But as I use Win 98se it likes to throw a huge wobbler if I have my modem attached as well as my phone, so I usually have to pull out all other usb cables before I try to connect my phone to the pc. If I use any other usb port at the back of my case to connect my n-gage, it freezes the pc.
Here's hoping that when/if Nokia release the next n-gage they'll sort out the majority of problems we've been experiencing BEFORE the public release!
Well the fact that your pc freezes when you shove in multiple usb sources is not good. You dont have a spare copy of xp lying around do you. The only reason being is that i have multiple OS on my computer and i always use xp for removable drives and such since it usualy goes through ok. Otherwise Check the mmc. Your usb are they onboard or is it a seperate pci card?
Do you think you could check the internet for any bugs with your usb device or motherboard? I have installed the n-gage on two win98 machines once was no problem the second it sort of did it. I think there is a specific procedure that must be taken and that it conflicts with allot of other drivers installed on win98 systems. DO you have any other removable drives that use the usb port?
I would like a full list of your devices and exact specs of pc?
I want the date you installed win98 and all the updates carried out?
Hopefully your problem should be solved soon
Hmm, I really don't fancy having a dual boot system on my pc. I don't like XP. I'm holding off installing it until I really really have to (ie when Microsoft no longer give support for Win 98).
My usb is onboard but I have a hub attached to port 1 which splits it into 4. (My ports are at the back of the case and they're a pain in the butt to get to if I want to change any cables) I now have 4 at back and 4 at front of case.
It's strange as I don't have any problems with any other usb devices (modem, scanner, camera). The only one I usually have attached is the modem, I only plug the others in when I need to use em. I have no other removable drives that use the ports. I can't find any probs with the motherboard.
My pc spec is AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 384Mb Ram (yes, it's correct), 128Mb Nvidia GeForce graphics card, 32g HD, Asrock K7S8X motherboard. Win98SE was installed on this pc when it was built about 8 wks ago and all necessary updates have been installed and are uptodate.
If there's any other info you need, let me know.
Thanks for all the help you're giving me, it really is much appreciated.
Well i Have had multiboot systems for a long time now they are very stable. In your case I would use two hard drives or mount xp after win98 because it can cross the 1024 cylinder boundary. I used partition magic and bootmagic. Oh and Microsoft no longer provides support for win98 and hasn't for 6 months now. If you realy dont want winXP. Then I suggest this. Unistall the drivers for your usb port and install them again. This will be a pain in the neck. Unistall all usb devices and restart check nothing has been reinstalled then restart again once restarted plug in n-gage and install. If n-gage works fine install the rest otherwise we might have to go to more drastick measures. Oh before you do anything have you got any conflicting hardware. Check for hardware that might have a yellow ! next to it. If so unistall the ofending item unless its absolutely vital.
