'Messages' is busy

Whenever I have finished using an application I always use Handy Day (4.1) to close it, including the Messages app. However, on the P900, the Messages app only seems to close 3 or 4 times. After that, I get an error message "'Messages' is busy", and it refuses to close.

Obviously, it's not hugely important, but this never happened on the P800. To make matters worse, I seem to have less working RAM available on the P900 and it's memory cleaning doesn't seem to be as good. Every week or so I have to re-boot the phone as it's running out of available memory, even though there are only the three default apps running.

The P800 seemed to have about 8.9MB of free RAM after boot-up and even after a few months would still have over 5MB. The P900 seems to start at 7.0MB and very quickly drop below 5MB.

Has anyone else noticed this and, if so, have you been able to single out any particular culprit?

Yes, I'm a bit annoyed by this as well... UIQ 2.1 really is alot more memory hungry. The 2MB's (about) of RAM you lose can be crucial trying to run memory/power hungry apps such as EDoom etc. I enjoyed playing Doom on my P800, and even more on the P900 with the improved screen, better cam/browser buttons and bigger jog dial, but having to reboot before I start the game every single time, gets a bit... argh...

Granted that I don't play games that often, and the version of Doom I have is about 16MB in size (DoomII - full version), and together with V-Rally it's the only apps where the available amount of RAM really is an issue, it's still annoying that SE raised the storage memory with 4MB, but did nothing to the RAM. 😞

About the 'Messages' app, it closes just fine using SMan...

Yeah I noticed that, when HandyDay failed to close it, SMan would, but it wouldn't free up any memory in doing so. Closing it properly in HandyDay (or SMan) will normally free up about 300k. But after it's failed to close in HandyDay, closing it in SMan makes little if any difference. Same as killing it with HandDay. I suspect SMan tries to close it and, when it fails, Kills it instead.

I suspect, given the error message, that some bug in Messages (or an app that is accessing Messages) is failing to clean up a child or thread properly.

Hmm, sounds strange.. I use Tracker together with SMan and have no such problems. The 'Messages' app closes everytime using either Tracker (with a shortcut key), or with SMan, no problems, memory gets freed...

So, I would suspect it's more likely a bug in Handy Day.

Do you have the latest firmware version, btw?

Yeah, I updated online a couple of weeks back. Could well be a HandyDay thing. But, given their new "Upgrade" policy and the fact that the new HandyDay 5\2004 is a massive piece of bloatware, I think I can live with it 😉

just noticed this post from ghoonk in another thread;

The only thing I liked about Tracker was the ability to cose applications, which I don't think HD2004 does very well in some cases (e.g. closing of Messages app)

So it's not just me!

Cheers
