Hi
I've just got an ngage
Does anyone know why my sony vaio laptop running windows 98 doesn't recognise my ngage as a removeable device when going to my computer?
Any help appreciated,i'm desperate to add pics, music etc to my new toy!
MMC is inserted by the way
Cheers
Since you are using Win98, You should install the drivers on the CD that comes with your n-gage when you bought it.😊
Ok so installed pc suite, is this the same as the drivers
Pc suite doesn't recognise the phone by the way?
Appreciating help...........i need it!
First things first become a member this place is an invaluable source of info. Secondly PCSUITE can not use USB! The drivers are on the cd. when you insert n-gage does it try to install it or does it just not see it? Also it doesn't actualy see the n-gage but the memory card contained in it. The memory card must either be the one that already came with the phone or one that you bought and is not a nokia game(they are locked). Hope that helps.
Install The Nokia Audio Software (from the CD or www.n-gage.com) and that should add the uSB drivers you need.
ok so pc suite is bluetooth only?
Do you mean nokia audio manager on the cd?
Thanks again
Yes on the cd and pc suite requires bluetooth!
Ok installed audio manager which opens fine but doesn't recognise the phone?
Still no removeable drive when connected via usb?
cheers
I've got XP and it doesn't recognise my phone either ...
It doesn't even detect any USB activity.
but anyway I switched to a cardreader to transfer files onto my MMC.
Ensure that all the necessary hardware is ok (usb cable, n-gage, usb ports). Go to my computer and check in device manager whehter your usb is working fine. Your n-gage must be on and an mmc card inserted. Good luck!
First try unintsalling the software, plug in the USB with N-gage, does the OS detect ngage? check in device manager. then it should install the drivers from the CD.
Hi to all!
I had a similar problem with my Sony VAIO laptop. After going on the Sony VAIO site, I discovered that my VAIO supports USB port type version 1.0 only. You may want to check this out before buying any USB devices. I bought an 8-in-one memory card reader that worked great with my P900 but it wouldn't read the MMC card for my son's N-Gage because the MMC is a high-speed device and it requires USB 2.0. The other possibility is getting a cardbus with a USB 2.0 controller. Just make sure it has the adaptor with it as the laptop doesn't have the power to support the device on its own.
However, like someone has already mentioned, you shouldn't have a problem running the audio manager, but make sure you uninstall the PC Suite first or you may get conflicts. For your laptop support you might want to try the Sony site:

Good luck.😊
I am sure you do not require usb 2.0 to read an mmc. I have a memory card reader(8 in 1) by lexar and i have used it to read a multitude of memory cards including dozens of differing mmcs. I bought it from www.mymemory.co.uk just in case you are curious. I have used it in my old toshiba laptop(win 98 /pentium 200) and a multitude of other systems most of them usb 1 and a few usb2 the only difference i noticed is that usb2 was slightly faster and that is it. Your problem may be elseware. Maybe memory card maybe memory card reader or maybe both. Hope you solve your problem!
Thanks for your reply Shadow12. You wouldn't believe the hassle I've had and only last night after replying to this message and reading some of the FAQs on this site, I started mucking around with the N-Gage and for some reason that never happened before, WINXP recognised the drive. So I'm delighted as I can now transfer stuff.
I think the problem initially started when I installed the Nokia PC Suite along with the P900 suite. There must have been a conflict with the USB drivers. Anyway I unistalled all of the Nokia and P900 stuff including the drivers, controllers, the lot, and let WinXP install them again. The result was that the P900 was recognised, but not the Nokia. Last night I tried the Audio suite and it recognised the N-Gage for the first time ever so I rebooted and plugged in the N-Gage USB, and voila - there was the K: drive in My Computer. I still don't understand how the problem occurred in the first place, but your right about the USB recognition of port 1.0. It's working fine now but I don't think I'll bother reinstalling the Nokia PC suite incase the problem re-occurs. It's thanks to this board that I gave it another shot, as I've searched everywhere without a solution. Thanks guys.😃
