Resetting N-Gage to Factory Settings....

25 replies · 9,378 views · Started 12 January 2004

I would like to ask if there is a way to completely "clean up" the device to it's factory settings. I've installed and uninstalled far too many applications on my n-gage and they are leaving lots of unecessary files behind (e.g software license infos, databases, etc). Now I cant run some apps because of conflicting shared files, invalid engines, etc...etc..etc...I want to delete them all up but finding them would be very tricky. Is this possible? 😕

A follow-up question to that...... has anybody tried deleting everything on Drive C (flash memory)? I think this might be a solution but Im a bit scared as I might not be able to start my device if I do so.

I'm shure(90%) it will still still boot up, but it mains to be seen if you can actually delete all the files on the C drive as many or used by the system (contacts for instance?).

I don't know about any reset option, but check the series 60 facts?

I also gave a gut-feeling that the phone will still boot up since all the critical files are stored in the ROM - and all apps that comes with the n-gage are stored in there as well. I will try the hard reset first....

Ok here is the result of what I did: The hard reset "*7370#" didnt work at all.

I made a backup copy of everything on Drive C to my memory card and deleted everything.... guess what....

The phone still boots up, my contacts and messages are still there, I can still make outgoing calls, BUT....

I have lost the Menu functionality, USB Connectivity, MP3, Radio, and cannot receive incoming calls.... so basically, it means I need to return it to the shop and have Nokia fix it. Hehehe.... what I did was really stupid but somebody has got to do it. Case closed... I hope everybody reads this bcoz this is really important.

So the moral lesson is:

Be careful when using "File Explorer" software and do not attempt to delete stuff you dont really know where and what it is for. And do not tamper with the Flash Memory.

Well done!
You may not have succeeded in solving your problem but you sure have been brave and done something alot of people have been wanting to do and never dared. Now we all know. We owe a bit of our wisdom to you. Hope all goes well with the recovery of your n-gage.

I took my n-gage to the nokia service center for a repair. It didnt cost me anything and I got it the same day.... I also got a free firmware upgrade... hehe... the real cost of doing something stupid. 😃

By the way, Nokia told me they reformatted my phone to install a fresh operating system. Any software concerns and upgrades are free.....

well done!

can you notice anything useful in the new firmware?

something like..

possibility to store SMS on the MMC?
or to save all you send with Bluetooth to MMC?

😱

Odd that if you deleted everything on the C: the phone still booted up. The 7650 certainly won't boot up if everything on C: is erased. 😕

Well my loudspeaker used to be soft when I use Mp3 as ringing tones... now it's really much louder after the upgrade. A memory backup is the only means to store SMS on the MMC. Hehehe.... Bluetooth... ?? I havent tried it yet.

I have n-gage and have placed mp3 on my n-gages mmc. I try to chose it from the list in profiles but get nowhere since it does not appear in the list. I convert it to wav and its there. I have also read before that you cant have mp3s as ringtones or is it message alerts. I am not sure. But you guys are being straight with me I can you use mp3s as ringtones right?

Yes you can use mp3 as ringtones.... but the odd thing is we have the opposite concern..... I cant use WAV as ringtones! Hahaha... crazy nokia people. This is very absurd.

I use a WAV ringtone. Make sure your WAV files are in c:\Nokia\Sounds\Digital on the phone.

Yeah, this could actually become very handy!!! If it is possible to boot off the mmc after copying c: to the mmc, couldnt we do this if we had the white screen of death problems??? Although this wouldnt give us mp3 player, radio, menu etc, it would allow us to hard reset the internal memory to get the phone up and working again!!! easy 😎

So the question is, did it really boot from the mmc after deleting c: or not dude??

PLZ reply asap 😉

mp3 cannot be listed out in the profile > ringtone when there is a mp3 player application installed. somehow it captures the mp3 in the card and doesnt allow u to choose it as the ringtone. try uninstalling all the application in your phone that uses mp3 or plays mp3.

my menu icon don't come when i press the menu key . contacts are still there.
