Hey, I live in Australia and recently purchased a N-Gage from ebay. Unfortunately it didn't come with a memory card 😞. Luckily the auction was real cheap however.
Now i'm looking into buying a new MMC card for it, and i'm debating whether to go for a 256mb or a 128mb card.
Now I've read that 256's seem to have some compatibility errors. Are they serious ones? or simply just with certain brands etc?
I've been looking at buying this, from a dealer in Singapore. Now unfortunately, the brand name seems to be covered, so I cannot tell who manufactures them.

Would it be safe to use this in my N-Gage? or should I opt for another brand (although this is nice and cheap, a 128meg one from Dick Smiths will run me $99 alone!) They also sell 128 meg ones for really cheap. Would it be better for me to order one of these instead because they may have less errors?

Finally, what are the advantages of a 256 meg over a 128, besides the obvious space difference. Is it much better to have a 256? (e.g. are alot of the downloads and the like going to work better, or need higher levels of space etc?)
Besides the space i am guessing the two cards (if they are from the same manufacturer) will be the same. One thing i did notice though is the more stuff and more space you have on mmc some programs start up slower because I am guessing that they search the memory card to see if they can find any data relating to them. So I guess the only draw back realy is that there is more space to search through. Now if a 128mmc is less than half price og the 256mmc then it makes sence to get two 128 since you will have two cards so if one breaks you have the other (ofcourse this is just my humble opinion). I bought a 128mmc and havent really managed to fill it up other than when I have loaded it with music and films. Watching Clone wars on your mobile is so cool!!!
Hope that helps.
My personal opinion would be to settle with 128MB. You wont have any problems with it at all since it is guaranteed by Nokia to be compatible with the N-Gage. Brands wont matter and they will still all work.
As with 256MB, only certain brands are compatible. If you have read the other posts, one of them is Kingmax. Im not familiar with any other brands which will work if you opt to buy a 256MB. Although this will work, some people still experience problems like software incompatibility, inaccessible apps, installation problems, unplayable Mp3s, etc..etc.. The problem varies from person to person so it's not easy to tell which one you might experience. Sometimes, these problems disappear after a couple of days or so, some have learned to live with it, and some do not have any problems at all.
Applications made for symbian phones are not really memory consuming since you can have a complete app for as little as 7K. The maximum I have seen is 800KB (which is Opera Browser). That means you will have more than enough space if you will use 128MB. As with Mp3's, I have encoded them to 112kbps to reduce filesize (which is as good as 128kbps on the n-gage). I am able to store 40 songs.. but you can save more if you will decrease the bitrate.
So its upto you. If you dont mind getting a little pissed-off at the end of the day, lay down your cards and just hope for the best. I hope this helps you decide. 😎
Thanks guys! That's exactly what I wanted to know.
I think i'll give the 128meg card a try for now.
I can't wait to test out all the MP3/Games/Movie/Emulation goodness 😃
