New to 6600, few pointers please..

6 replies · 2,217 views · Started 22 January 2004

I've been away from small pda software for a few years now so could do with a few pointers all in one thread. I could run a search on all of them before you all ask but then again I could ask all my questions in one thread and be done with it.

1. Is there simple contact manager software out there, allowing for contact editing from my PC.

2. Do upgrades to the phones software/firmware come out? Can I update it myself?

3. This old favourite, is there any simple video app/hack that will allow me to record more than 9 second clips?

4. Best source of freeware apps and shareware?

5. Has anyone created an Apple theme yet? The Crystal one seems to be the best that I have found up until now. Any other suggestions for a quality full theme package?

6. I've asked this in a seperate thread and received no response so I will try again here. I cannot seem to change my ringtone. Even though I personalise my general profile and activate it with a custom ringtone it never plays when the phoen rings. If I play the file manually it is fine, no problem at all so it is not a problem with the Tone. I have even tried attaching different ringtones to different contacts to see if they willplay when ringing me, again I seem to be stuck with the default Ibiza party tune regardless what I do.

Is anyone else experiencing this proble? Is there a fix?

7. Desktop shortcuts, is there any way to change the annoying Vodafone Live shortcut on the desktop and replace it for somethign useful? I cna't figure out hwo to do this.

Thanks

Yes. You can use PC Suite the software that came with the phone.

2. Do upgrades to the phones software/firmware come out? Can I update it myself?

Yes but to my knowlege there havent been any updates yet. You have to take phone to a Nokia Service center to be updated, its not something you would normally do yourself.

3. This old favourite, is there any simple video app/hack that will allow me to record more than 9 second clips?

No hack for the built in software. There are a couple of developers who are looking into software for better / longer recording.

4. Best source of freeware apps and shareware?

Have a look at www.symbianware.com
www.handgo.com
www.greysworld.com
www.the7650.com
www.wildpalm.co.uk
for freeware and shareware, demos etc.
Also search this forum for the software you require and nearly all threads will have links in them.

5. Has anyone created an Apple theme yet? The Crystal one seems to be the best that I have found up until now. Any other suggestions for a quality full theme package?

I'm sure i've seen an Apple theme. Go to the Nokia 6600 Themes forum on this site and do a search, I think there is someones personal web site with this theme on it.

When you say custom ringtone, what do you mean? Is it a sound clip recorded or a wav file sent to the phone?
Could possibly be in the wrong sound format for the phone to recognise it as a ringtone. Sorry cant help much on this one.

Not got this as i'm not on Vodafone but you could always move it somewhere else and put a new shortcut in its place.

Anyway I hope this helps, sorry I couldnt give much detail.

Cheers,
Mike

You probably got no reply because all you answers can be found on the many other threads already in this forum - hit the search button.
Another source to find your answers is the manual that came with your phone.... If you dan't have one it can be downloaded from Nokia's site.

You ringtone problem is more than likely caused by having your ringtone in the wrong folder or the file is the wrong format.
Look out for a 6600 version of Philips Camcorder Pro, should be updated soon and is currently one of the best apps.

Thanks for the replies and Links. I wouldn't have asked the questions if I had been able to find any answers in the forum by searching. There are plenty of posts asking questions and plenty of replies telling people to run searches but very few posts with answers to any of the questions.

Just coming back to a couple of answers above, I don't believe that Nokia Suite gives you the ability to edit contacts. All you can do is sync with an Outlook or OE file. I really don't want to clutter my phoen up with my entire email outlook contacts box. I just want be able to type in manually and edit some of the entires that I have saved on my phone already and its Sim.

The ringtone thing is really confusing my because the files are all midi and play fine if I open them manually. They are also located in the Phone Memory/Tones directory? Isn't this the right place to be?

The Vodafone Live shortcut, you mention that I can just move it elsewhere but unfortunately don't let slip just how I go about doing this. I can't find anything in the manual and haven't managed to figure it out by fiddling. I just want to be able to alter the two shortcut button on the phone "desktop" (The buttons above 1 and 3). Anyone?

I've run searches and read my manual and am still stumped so any more input would be welcome. Ta.

MIDI Ringtones should go in:-
C:\nokia\sounds\digital
or
E:sounds\digital

To change your shortcut:
Press 'menu'
goto 'tools' then 'settings' then 'phone'
select 'standby mode'
you will see entries for 'left selection key' & 'right selection key'
Select 'right selection key'
you will see a list of applications which can be allocated to that key, take your pick.

Contacts, you can edit them on the phone itself or transfer them to outlook and edit them there and transfer them back.
If you don't want them mixed up with you other outlook info then you can probably (don't use outlook) export that info first and delete them them re-import them when your finished editing your phone ones.

Best

Thanks the lot Will, that is just what I needed.

I haven't receieved a call yet so I don't know if the Ring tone will be working yet though that makes perfect sense. It seems a bit odd then when I had the tones in the Tones directory as opposed to the Digital directory I could still choose them from the list when changing my Profile but fingers crossed all is well now.

Shortcut is all changed now too thanks to you. In all my diggings through the settings of the phone I never looked at Standby mode because what on earth has Standby mode got to do with Shortcuts? I don't see the connection there but it doesn't matter now. Thanks again.

Editing contacts on the phone itself is very time consuming especially when you have hundreds and you want to combine all emails, home and work numbers into one entry. It just takes too long. I will try exporting the data and manipulating it in whatever format the export takes. It would seem to make sense for Nokia to introduce a took whcih simply allows you to do this on the fly though. All my previous PC syncing mobiles have had this.

Thanks again for your answers, useful I hope for others as well as myself.
