taking 6600 housing off

26 replies · 8,747 views · Started 22 January 2004

I didn't think that the 6600 had a user removeable housing ?

Just had a look at mine and the only thing that comes off is the battery cover, nothing else.

Rob.

well it's not removable in the way that Nokia has snap on covers, but it can be removed...just wanna know how from someone who has done this.

I don't want to poke around with my screwdriver and possibly damage something!

Can anyone advise on how to take the housing apart without damaging it?

its not hard at all, its just like a tighter version of the "xpress on covers"

at the back of the phone, underneath the battery, there are 2 circle holes, shove a paper cliip or something in there and it'll loosen the side, run your fingers through and bang! done like a dinner, the 6600 is open, exposing the screen, keypad and all the internals.

The 6600 is indeed Xpress on cover. You can even remove the silver round surrounding the Camera, to take that off you just need to rotate it clockwise, the clip will be taken off automatically. For the housing, the two pin would loose the case but its best to start taking it off at the bottom. Start on the edges and snap the sides.

No, the 6600 IS NOT an XPress on cover. It is not listed by Nokia as a phone with replaceable covers. Check Nokia.com and you will see that the 6600 is not listed as a phone with XPRESS ON Covers.

It is not designed for this. I'm not saying that you can't remove the casing, but it is not designed to be removed by the user, therefore, if you break it, you are on your own.

So I would strongly advise that you don't remove the cover and if you do, you do so at your own risk.

on either side

The very fact that there is such a detailed guide on how to remove the casing just adds weight to the point that the 6600 is not designed to have it's covers removed.

I have visions of many 6600 owners walking round with their phones wrapped up in sticky tape, elastic bands and superglue after their failed attempts at removal !! 😱

Rob.

That might be the case (no pun intended) if you are really ham fisted. But even I managed the tricky job of stripping a 7650 and that was tricky.

Even done some soldering of LEDs on my old 6110!

Well I dont have a special disassembly rig so I used 2 allen keys that fit into the holes. Once the housing popped up a bit from the frame, I used a guitar plectrum to lever the rest of it off. I was careful not to scratch or damage anything so it took me 5 mins to do.

coll idea with the plectrum. 😉

nice, that it is not so tricky, like it was with the 7650.

ThX for the feedback

Then why does it say on the box "X-Press on Covers" ?

They do come off. and easily.

Not on my box it doesn't !! What it DOES say however is that the Nokia range of accesories "includes.....X-Press On Covers".
But there is no such thing for the 6600. Check the Nokia website.
I mean, have you ever handled a phone with X-Press On covers ? It has instructions in the manual on how to remove them, they're widely available in mobile phones stores (or the dodgy geezer on the market) and the covers themselves pop on and off without the need for tools or pointless threads on a forum to do so.

It's like reading a car brochure and seeing a Ford Ka, and then seeing the 3 Litre V6 engine and thinking it's an option 🙄

Rob.

yeah I think I misread that.. odd...

Just assumed it had because I only got mine last fri and others in the store had different covers on them dependant of the network, like they do with express-on... and I have seen new covers in "dodgy" shops but none official however. Seen blue, a different silver combo and gold so far, offical covers - but not in boxes or anything...

There are 2 different body colours...Rose & Silver, as you say, network dependent.

I haven't seen anyone selling replacement covers except 3rd party stuff on Ebay, as detailed in this thread, but my whole point is that, regardless of whether you can remove the cover or not, it's not designed like an X-Press On cover phone, therefore it is not up to being dismantled frequently and it's only supposed to be done by Nokia Authorised Service agents, so if it goes wrong, you are covered.

As I said earlier, I can just see threads appearing on here about how it all went wrong, when they bust their case and couldn't get another etc...just being cautious, that's all

😃

But insurance doesn't cover you for willful damage or neglect 🙄

I believe its Rose and Light Grey. There is also a 3rd colour that is exclusive to the Chinese market - Champange

They sell them here, i bought the rose set from them as rose is not available from my country and imo the rose colour is very very nice indeed 😊

All I can say is in singapore and Jakarta last week I saw many different 3rd party covers, just a pitty none to my liking.... fwiw my previous phone was a 3810 and only had the original cover long enough for me to walk from the place i bought it to the first street vendor that had a cover i liked (less than 1/2 an hour, i was in HK and I am very fussy about cover designs. the original (and only genuine cover I have) has sat in a plastic bag ever since. I find this the best way to use mobile phones because:
1. you scratch it, who cares buy an new cover (I have scrached and dropped mine heaps)
2. adds to resaleability of the phone as it looks new and is a genuine cover, but then I never sold a phone cause my family allways seem to inherit my old phones. my wife got the 8310, and she passed my old 8210 to her sister who retired her 5110 that was dieing.

Oh well, I never liked the original covers anyway.

PS my wife had a really good hello kitty cover on the 8210 which we bought in Brisbane.

Do you know any place where I can buy Housing for Nokia 6600 ??? I found on ebay some but I do not like them ... 😃

There's the original Champange Housing, here (which is an exclusive to the asian market), pity there isn't a keypad as i would have ordered it.

There's also the original Rose housing here but that also doesn't have the keypads, i ordered one of those and can guarantee that they are original. I ordered it even though they don't have the rose keypad as they are the only ones that sell the camera back sliding of the same colour. I did order the rose keypad from another place though, that place can be found here, they also sell the light grey housing but they don't sell the camera sliding (top part of the camera)
