I am suddenly finding thaht my battery is onlylasting a few hours on standby. I haven't loaded any software and turning Bluetooth off seems to make no difference. Is it just that the battery needs replacement? Is there a battery memory problem and if so what is the fix?

just get youself anew battery... the faulty batteries is somehow a common issue in the P800s
This happened to me in the weeks leading up to my p800 formatting itself without warning. It turned out that the internal memory was full (photos, sms's, emails, etc).
It seems that as the memory fills up, the phone slows to a crawl (I guess it's trying to do lots of memory management), and drains the battery REALLY quickly. It was lasting for about 5 hours before dying.
Try freeing up some space on the internal memory and see if that helps.
