Best resolution for phone wallpaper?

what's the best resolution to use for a JPG file to set it as a wallpaper? i uploaded a pic from my PC and resized it to 174x173 (taking after the resolution of the images that came with the phone) but it turned out grainy, unlike those images in the phone memory. i would greatly appreciate your inputs.

i use 176x144, i find that the best as there's no white spaces on the sides and on the top or bottom

yep!...

176 x144 is the exact size for the 6600 wallpapers

and if you want the best image quality i recommend you
to use BMP (24bits) format for them, are about 80kb.
