I am using the built in email functions in my Nokia 6600, but can not figure out how to send email.
The problem is that my provider does not have an SMTP servers, (so far as the Cingular Tech support says).
I can not use any of my other SMTP servers becasue the phones IP address does not reverse DNS lookup.
I could use some sort of authentication, but I can not put this info into the phone anywhere.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to send regular email from my phone.
This is the only thing have left to set up and then it will be perfect.
Andrew
You need to use your operator's SMTP server if you use GPRS to send e-mail that is,you say your operator doesn't have SMTP server so you are scre*ed,sorry. If you have a dial up account from a regular ISP use its settings to create CSD access point on phone and use your ISP's SMTP server. It just might work.
Which country are you in, and which is the telephone operator network that you are using?
Sorry for not providing more info
I am in the US and use Cingular.

That's not true! You can use WHATEVER SMTP server you want to.The thing is that you need a INTERNET CONNECTION via GPRS to access you mailbox.
I access Yahoo!, PlanetQuake, Amena and my operator mailboxes via Movistar GPRS INTERNET connection with no problem at all!
phpsocialclub, your operator must provide you those settings if you are suscribed to such service.I'm Spain so I can't help you in that matter.
deathmonger, most ISPs that do not want spammers to use their SMTP servers will block SMTP traffic that is not coming from their own IP address space.
In other words, they will not allow SMTP server access from somebody else's systems.
If they would, they'd have what's called an open [SMTP] relay, and as soon as spammers discover it, they will use it to send zillions of email with faked sender addresses, and the ISP with the open relay will be the target of bounces, spam reports, etc.
That means that if your ISP is not your mobile operators, your ISPs SMTP server will not work with your mobile phone, but you should use the mobile operator's SMTP server instead.
If the SMTP server supports authenticated SMTP sending, then it will work as long as you have a valid credentials (username & password or client certificate depending on how the authentication has been set up).

That is not true either !!
You need to use the SMTP address of your GSM service provider.
For example, if using Orange, then use.... smtp.orange.net
To summerize
I can currently recieve mail, ssh with putty, use opera, so I assume that the connection is working properly.
I either need to know what Cingular (USA) SMTP server is or set up authentication for a remote SMTP server.
For Cingular:
I have read that it was photo.mycingular.com, but that does not work.
I read that info here (http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html)
For A remote server:
I have set up a mail server to allow anyone on the cingular network to send email, but the Cingular IP addresses do not reverse dns look up. I am using Postfix smtp server on Linux.
Other than that all of my mail servers, I have access to 4, require some sort of authentication from the mail client, which the phone can not provide.
So the question remains. Are there any mail clients for the 6600 that support advance authentication for sending mail?
Thanks for everyones help on this issue.
Andrew
Have you tried using the IP addy rather than photo.cingular.com?
Some networks have rouble with their DNS translation.
Try 208.62.68.140

Maybe is so in U.S.A but here in Spain you can use ANY SMTP server you like with ANY of the operators we have, Amena , Vodafone Espaa and Telefonica Movistar.
Deathmonger - if that is true then you should be able to give him one of the SMTP servers you use for him to send his mail throu..
Perhaps in Spain most servers are configured as open relays.
In which case that is probably where all the SPAM comes from 😊

tried the IP address and it did not work,
thanks for all the help though.
