What is "good"?

Munky from Korn:

"I think it is true that Hitler went to heaven, if such a thing as heaven really exists. He felt what he did was right, and I think that if what you feel you're doing is right in your heart, then you can't be wrong"

What does that mean for Fred and Rose West, George W(anker) Bush, that couple who killed those school kids a few weeks back, etc. They all did what they thought was "right" and in the case of Bush is still trying to do what his warmongering dictators brain says is right. If Hitler gets to heaven it means that hell is gonna be very very quiet and empty.

Nah. My wife knows her deeds are all pure evil, and with her in Hell it is going to be a very noisy place indeed.

The Strolling Bones got it right in the title of their song 'Sympathy for the Devil' - if Mrs Wavey gets down there he needs all the sympathy he can get...

In an ironic way, all the good people are down below. Do you seriously think that people like Jim Morrison, Mama Cass, Jimi Hendrix, the guy who invented PCP, the people who throw really good parties ar egoing to be acdepted in a sin free 'heaven?'

Hell, I'm going down below (sic), for the greatest Rock COncert in the world, and it'll all be MC'd by Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce.

Nice.

I can't quite remember the exact phrase, but it could have been intended for such cases.

Something like "The road to Hell is full of Good Intentions" or something. Someone care to validate/correct ? It's bugging me now, the above just doesn't quite sound right.

Thanks Ewan,

You can sleep well tonight knowing you have done your good deed for the day.

Aw nuts, can;t have a good nights sleep (Eilidh now 6 weeks old and growing...) so I'm away to tell a joke about 9/11 that's in particularly bad taste to a group of Vietnam vets in the local pub... 😉

A greek poet, Kavafy, once wrote in his book "The road to Ithaki"...

"The most important on a Journey (...road) to a destination (...Hell or Heaven) is not the destination itself, but the Experiences, the Joy, the Pain, the Love, the Life you have leaved, the Actions undertaken (...good or bad). All of that are the important things (...in life) and not the destination itself..."

The road to Hell or Heaven might be paved with good or bad intentions, but the most important is to leave your life according your believes and your freedom, and not reaching the final destination (...Hell or Heaven) without feeling & leaving all of the above. How will you be able to appreciate Hell or Heaven without that ?

I can't believe in Heaven or hell for the following simple reason:

Heaven should be all good ... if all is good ... you won't be experiencing it as all good for so long ... you can't experience good without bad ... if you don't now how bad feels you won't now how good feels ... so if there is no "bad" in heaven it will probably be a place for us to act like living plants.

Best example ... even sex turns bad if you do it every single minute of the day ! 😉

I totally agree with you Dazler...

Life, a Journey, Hell or Heaven, Life Experiences have & must be taken with good & bad !!! There are no other ways. Good & Bad can not be separated. As the title of this topic, What is Good, we could easily say What is Bad ???

PS. I don't agree about the sex thing. Sorry... (guess this must be my greek side coming out, or is it my sheep's ghost screaming for more...)

But is that not resolved by having a Heaven and a Hell.

If there was just a Heaven, then you might try that argument. But as there is a Hell, you have a referance you can compare to, to realise how much better off you are.

Looking at a different track, many people seam comfortable to say how could you enjoy Heaven if it is always wonderful etc.
How about looking at the opposite end. Are you saying that by always being in Hell, you would soon get used to it and not be to bothered by it after a while.
Taken to the ultimate conclusion, you would be saying there is no real difference between Heaven and Hell after an initial adjustment period.

Given a choice, I think I'd rather avoid being thrown into a flaming pit etc...

Another point to consider is the whole concept of time, adjustment to environment etc. Doesn't the whole time thing take on a new meaning in the next life, so many of these arguments would no longer make sense.

Being a believer, just thought I'd leave a few points to ponder on.

If you are capable of putting this to the test successfully, you should be in a different line of business! Me, I would just like the opportunity to try it...
