connect SX1 to a server

Hello,
I'm a student in last year studies, and I have a project to present to the end of this year.
this project is connect a smartphhone, using symbian OS, to a server. with GPRS. I have no more information. this connection with to server is used for synchronize data using in a midlet application.
resume : I have an application on a GSM(with symbian OS) and I have to communicate with a server.And I d'ont know if I can do that with J2ME. or Do I have to write a C++ application

I'm a little lost, I don't know how to do that
So, if you can help me(by giving example, or the steps to follow), please don't esitate.
