Vodafone To Block WAP Sites?

5 replies · 3,285 views · Started 13 February 2004

I heard today that Vodafone plan to block ALL wapsites apart from their own from next month and only allow surfers to surf to Vodafone sites or those sites which companies put up to them to 'vet' and include in their whitelist!

This seems a bit absurd!

What about all those software companies that supply their software over WAP? Like openBit's photographer for instance?

All these sites will just die, and no official announcment from Vodafone.

Sound like a sneeky ploy for them to force surfers to use their own services only and make more money for themselves.

Surly they can not do this can they?
Whatever happened to freedom of information?

Anyone else heard about this?

Will

All operators are doing it, it's to prevent kids from porn, basically a mobile wide net censorship scheme.
BANGO have had all their sites OK'd

The problem is of course any self imposed censorship is on very shaky ground.

And in these parts of the world, a couple of years ago local operators with WAP opened their WAP access for users (to access anybody's WAP sites anywhere in the world, instead of just their own).
