Lens clear plastic cover: does it affect your picture quality

8 replies · 5,556 views · Started 24 February 2004

Hey all,

OK, first of all, I HAD removed the original plastic lens cover from my 6600 since it was scratched (just the plastic!). So I went ahead and put a protective clear plastic, cut-up, that was usd for my Digital Camera's screen (made by some company I forgot the name, but it was purchased"

But before I do that, I was curious whether the plastic cover, original or not, have any factor on the quality of the picture. I found out that using my digital camera's protective clear pastic makes it worse! (SEE BELOW PICTURES).

So now, the questions are:
1. Does the ORIGINAL clear plastic cover for the lens affect the picture?

2. if I buy on of those Krussel case, would the clear plastic affect the picture quality?

3. This may sound stupid, but, errr... does the Krussel case HAVE the plastic cover for the lenses?

4. If no cases, how do YOU PROTECT the lense from scratches?

1. USING NOKIA BUILT-IN CAMER PROGRAM - WITH PLASTIC

If you want to submit a sample picture taken with your camera with / without the plastic cover (tell me on this), then email it to me and I'll submit it to my server. I got lotsa of space. 😊

Hi,

Originally I'd have said no, the lens plastic cover I wouldn't have thought would alter anything. Not as it's so close to the lens anyway. But, lloking at your pictures I'd say it does, it's certainly sharper without the plastic.
I've left mine of the phone as a precaution, but I may take it off as I have the KRussell case.

So I'd say:

1. Looks like it does a bit, less sharp.
2. It would be the same as the KRussell just has a hole for the camera to see thru.
3. No, all the KRussell has is a hole behind the flap.
4. Don't place it on it's back and clean it with a lens cleaning brush for a camera. To be honest, if it gets that bad I'm sure we can have the clear cover changed at a NSC.

I really think there is a difference, the pictures on the walls are sharper without the protective film.

Hey Coolice,

Thanks for the information.

Are you located in US? I am searching for the Krussel case and as of today I have not found a retailer in US who carries it.

Regarding asking the NSC for the lens plastic cover, that's not such a bad idea! I think I am going to email them for this. 😃

Hello,

Your welcome mate, glad to be of some help.

No, I'm in good old UK. Rather cold and wet UK at the moment!

I've read other people struggling to find KRussell case's in any other place than the UK.
Keep trying it'll be worth it as they are really nice cases.

Yeah, I'm sure Nokia would be able to replace the clear plastic shield over the camera. Whether it means a whole new shell for the phone is another thing and that may be expensive, but atleast there is the option if it gets that bad.

Ian

Sounds good to me. I'll check with a buddy of mine in Singapore since he said there are tons of Krussel case there, but haven't seen one for the 6600 yet.

About the NSC, I emailed Nokia directly from their site and they say Nokia doesn't give out this lens plastic cover thing, except when the phone is broken and they need to replace the whole casing. However, they said that the independent NSC may have those.

It'll be cool when Nokia finally come out with a phone that has an auto cover for the lens, just like real digicam. 😃

Hi,

Now that would be a nice idea, perhaps you should be on their design team and tell them to do that mate 😊

Ian

But take into account that you loose screen quality on the phone from having to look thru plastic over the top of your screen!
I suppose i am being unfair saying that because all cases are like this and the Krussel is certainly no worse but it has definately highlighted the reason why i have about 30 cases for all my previous phones and all of them are still brand new!
Whats the point in having all these pixels if you look at it through cling film glasses!

Coolice,

They pay me big bucks I'll join them right away! 😃

Elton,

True..true.. But I think I forgot to mention that I am thinking of using a PDA Screen overlays, cut up into small round piece and put on the lense. Some of those screen overlays are super clear and very good, so I think it'll be perfect to protect the lens.

But, at $ 19 a iece (i.e. Martin Overfield's overlay), it's REALLY expensive. Ah well, better than $ 100 to replace the cover, I think! 😊 I'll let u al know when I ordered it.

Hey, maybe we can all chip in, but the overlays, and cut it up into 30 pieces. 😃

I was talking about the phone screen not the lens,as in "its a big drawback when using a case".
