64MB+ MMC Cards will destroy your phone!

13 replies · 4,125 views · Started 01 March 2004

A few weeks ago I bought a 6600 and while paying the guy in the store told me that I should be aware of the fact that if I did put a MMC card into the shop which is over 64MB it would slowly begin to eat the phones memory and in the end destroy the phone.
I asked him where in the manual it says so and he said, well since Nokia only sells up to 64MB, that should be your answer. He also said that he called Nokia to get this info.

I just thought I wanted you to know, since I saw the MMC thread and alot of people are using 64MB+ cards.

If I am incorrect, please let me know, with a valid reason since I for one would like to use 512MB cards.

Whether this is truth or not I personally wouldnt believe anything a shop assistant tell you. Most of them dont know how to use a calculator let alone the, lets face it, more advanced features of smartphones. Gone are the days when a phone just made phone calls, now they are lets face it very complicated computers. And if he really did use the term "eats the phones memory" then I am guessing his statement is not based on much scientific fact.

The fact that Nokia only make up to 64Mb is probably a statement about only supporting up to these sizes but that is because there are only a few people who make bigger MMC cards and Nokia has a responsibility to 1. promote its own accesories and 2. be safe in offering advice on limits. Lets face it the Nokia documentation would have been written almost a year or so ago and to re-approve something like max MMC card use would probably take a few more months of testing. Lets wait to see what happens when the new wave of phones are released like the 7700 as the limits may have changed.

In the 6600 manual (and on the Nokia website) it states that cards up to, and including, 128Mb are fine for use in the 6600. Above that will invalidate the manufacturer's warranty. No reason is given for why they will not warrant the use of anything over 128Mb, but you can be fairly sure that it wouldn't cause the phone to attack the neighbour's dog, or eat your grandparents......Even if the idiot at the shop tells you so.

They wont warrant anything above 128 MB because they don't make anything above 128 MB.High capacity MMC's 256 and 512MB do work with the 6600.Just look at the tested MMC cards thread.

Does this mean that I can use a NON-Nokia MMC card up to 128MB and the warrenty will still be valid?

Does the manual specify only Nokia brands? If it does the you can't.But even if you do use Non Nokia, and something goes wrong with your device, will you tell them that you were using a non Nokia MMC? 😉

Maybe they can tell that I did...?

spanky316: Where in the manual does it say that the memory card can go up to 128MB?

There is no way they can tell what kind of MMC you had in there.

Its like a manufacturer knowing what CD you had in your drive last...

've got an original 128 MB Nokia MMC and everything is OK. I know people with 512 or 1 GB MMC and no problem too.

Alright, I see. So there shouldn't be a problem with buying a 512MB MMC card? The phone doesn't get slower (not because of it destroying) because of the big amount of MB's to load (even though there's nothing on it)?

when you swith the phone on it still has to do a system check which probably invovles checking the card and the bigger it is the longer it will take.

IT doesnt really slow down the phone after it has done that once. Also anything like that which may be attributed to the cards will improve with the bigger branded names making more and more...
