Creating a wap site

Hi

I am intrested in creating a wap or gprs or whatever it's called, site for series 60 phones. What language is it that i need to learn, i have lots and lots of experiance with html and javascript so i shouldn't find it difficult. Also where can i find hosting for wap sites.

Thanks in advance, cuddlers89

You might want to start by registering at Forum Nokia - they have a lot of material on this sort of thing. I can recommend the Nokia Internet Toolkit which includes aneditor with an emulator for Series 60 phone so you can see what it looks like as you right the code.

Series 60 phones support XHTML MP in service so you won't have to learn much. Its just a question of tigtening up your existing HTML skills (e.g. use <br /> instead of <br>, close image tages <im src="lah.jpg" /> etc etc. Writing in XHTML MP is probably going to be easier than larning WML (not that, that is difficult either).

Thanks,

When i tried to install the internet toolkit i got this message

can't launch executable
Could not find a sutible Java Virtual Machine on your system. See http:://java.sun.com to donload one Try re-installing the Java VM or change the Java VM used by the application

I'm on my way to that site now to see what its all about.

About the hosting could i use my existing provider and just upload the XHTML file there, for example

www.host.com/mywebsite
www.host.com/mywebsite/wap.xhtml

Would this work from a series 60 phone?

You need the JVM for Windows, try this link.

Yes you should be able to use your existing host. You may need to have the file ending as .html though.

Thanks

I'm having problems visiting that page propabley because i have a broadband connection shared over a wireless network which likes to mess me about sometimes, i'll try later and keep you posted on my progress.

I'm thinking about writing a tutorial after i've done some experiments, as i haven't seen this mentioned before and it's a usefull skill to have. 😃

I think the file is too big for that.

Try a serch on the sun site fro windows jvm (or google), any jvm should work.

Ok, so i finally got it to work, the users guide says, that it automaticaly detcts any SDKs on my pc and when i open the SDK controll planel it says no installed devices. Where do i get them from? or am i missing something? 😕

Downloaded one and when i installed it i got this message:

Java(TM) Runtime Enviroment update needed.
An unsupported JRE(TM) Version was detected. This product can be installed and used with JRE 1.4.2 or higher. Please download and update your JRE from http://java.sun.com and restart the installer.

Looks like i need yet another download 😞

So i download the new java thing ans start to install it, it was on 8% over half an hour ago, and now, its on...8%

Can't be bothered to wait, i'll try again tommorow.
