Thanks

There are two simple answers to this question.
No - Orange is an evil company don't touch them.
No - operators which lock their phones don't trust you, don't trust them either.

anyway it's not a matter of trust, as I believe that Orange and other companies that get SE to make them their own Firmware pay them a lot (and I mean a lot), so to make sure you won't get the phone from them and use it with another company, they simply lock it!
it's business :?
You're right I have. I have been privileged to receive worse customer service from Orange than I have had from any other commercial organisation I have ever dealt with. I would never have any business relationship with them under any circumstances.
As far as the firmware goes, my friend has a P800 on O2 and the only differences that we could find between his phone and mine were configuration-related (like the startup video). If you say that Orange have paid SE to write Orange-specific firmware, I am sure that you are right, but why would anyone want it?
You end up suffering a phone that cannot be used on other networks (which has been a problem for me on several occasions) and which cannot be kept up to date.
I stick to my previous answer - don't do it.
