searching names in contacts..it sucks!!

16 replies · 4,349 views · Started 14 September 2002

This is the first time i find it difficult to find a persons phone number from contacts from a mobile phone.
All mobile phones you just key in the first letter and so on and then names are displayed which start with this letter...but no! Nokia had to make it more dificult the search includes searching for a letter in any part of the contacts details thus making the search long..very long...
Imagine walking and having to key in all the letters of a name you are looking for!!!!

Hmm? Not sure what u mean. I push the joystick, type in the first letter and there they are ... the names which begin with this letter.

same here what do u mean

go to contact--open the keypad--press first letter-- tada!! all names with the first letter i typed are shown

I understand what spy is saying. When I go into contacts and enter the first character of the name I want I get an alphapetical list of all contacts containing that letter anywher in its name. Entering further letters will shorten the list - usually 2 is enough to see the one I want on the screen. I personally do not find this a problem.

However are people saying that when they enter the letter "T" for example that they get all names starting with a T - because I do not as explained above. If you do then what settings do we have different to achieve this result?

Well let me see..i have about 300 contacts and say i am looking for the name called "spiros" so i key in the letter "s" and instead of having all the names that start with an "s" displayed i have names starting with a or b or e but all of them have a second name or surname or something name starting with an "s". So then i have to narrow down the search by being more specific....it takes time!!

Basically it seems that the 7650 does a full name search for anything that starts with an "s".

Even in microsoft outlook if you key in "s" you have all names starting with an "s"!!!

There must be a way to correct this problem or something i am doing wrong. but what????

Oh, I see. I have nearly all contacts with only one name (taken from my old sim card which was not capable of more), thats why I do not have this problem.

Well, the only way is to put both names (name, surname) in the first name field.
instead of having
First Name
Nikos
Last Name
Padadopoulos
PUT:
First Name
Papadopoulos Nikos
Last Name
(empty)

correct me if i'm wrong.

My contacts are all stored as Last Name, First Name in my 7650. However I did not type mine in I syncronised using PC Suite with Outlook on my PC. In Outloo I heve set FileAs to show LastName, FirstName. Then when syncronising the first time there was an option to use the FileAs field. Voila - all the names are shown as LastName, FirsName on the 7650

Even if you put first name, last name it want change a thing.

I agree the best solution is to have both first name and last name in one field...but we shouldn't have to do this!!!

Open a new contact
edit the first name label to 'Last Name'
and then edit the Lastname Label to 'First Name'

and wallah, it will sort it the way you want it to,
but its a pain in the ass, and yes we shouldnt have to do it that way.

Even if you have everything in first name or last name it want change a thing!!
The 7650 does a global character search no a first letter in surname or last name search.
so if you have john smith and what you are looking for is smith and weston for example it will probable display john smith first and then smith and weston!!! it depends the alphabetical order the letters are after the characters you are lookin for are.

lol settle down ppl, getting all worked up over searching for contacts

lets just agree on the simple fact that if youve got 300 odd names in ya contact list, this phones contact list options are pretty f****d for ya?

Funny thing... I got a friend with a surname starting with . The only way to find this contakt is to search manually (by moving the joy stick).. Its not possible to find him by a regular search, not even if i use his whole name as a search string...
but I recon this has something to do with the translation....

Maybe one of those clever programers should make a nice add on for the contacts to personalise the way the 7650 searches for names.
Lets face it 99% of all phones do just a first letter search, why make it more complicated!!
