The Register is reporting a growing cloud of evidence that the P800 is having problems in keeping the Symbian OS stable, and many markets will not see the Phone till into 2003.
And with both Sony and Ericsson putting all their eggs in the P800 basket, we're eiher going to have a dud product released (can you say Apple Newton) or a significant delay - neither of which are going to help the joint venture survive to relase the P800 mark 2.
Bugger.
But it also says.
A spokesman for SonyEricsson told us that "we will start shipping the P800 to operators in a few weeks, with availability in selected markets during Q4." Which implies some markets will see it in 2003.
i.e. Ericsson say it WILL be out in certain markets in Q4. Which does not suggest known stability problems. Although I would expect some as with any new device with new a OS version (7.0). Hence keeping the initial release to selected markets may be nothing more than being prudent. Also they may not have completed all the required language versions yet! They may also not be able to keep up with initial demand so are planning a phased roll out.
All in all it seems to be a scaremongering article The title says "P800 slips to 2003?" but the article says it will be availible in 2002 but not for everyone. This will be bad new to some but not all. What we need is an official statement from Sony/Ericsson.
ZDNet have posted a clearer article. Sony Ericsson's camera-phone put on hold
Which gives a bit more data upon availibilty.
It contains the following about UK availiblity.
Peter Bodor, a spokesman for Sony Ericsson in London, said the phone will be in stores before Christmas and it will come out in volume in the first quarter of 2003.
I'm glad I'm not waiting for it 😊
They also do not think it will be a mass market phone.
"I don't think it will prove critical to the joint venture's business model. It's more branding and marketing which a flagship product can give. People look at it and say, 'Oh! That's fantastic.' But you don't really sell of a lot of such phones," one London analyst said.
All of a sudden I'm more interested in the T300 and T600 mentioned. What are these and are thye going to carry the Symbian OS as well? Anybody?
http://www.sonyericsson.com/communicasia/index.htm?english/frameset.htm,products/t300.htm
No to the t300
and no to the t600

They seem to be the new sony phones.
As I understand it though a new symbian phone may be on the way.

You tease 😉
I don't suppose you could let us know a bit more ?
Like do you mean Sony/Ericsson?
Or are you NDAyed

Do you mean from SonyEricsson or are you talking about the Nokia 6650?
Given that the competition to find 50 applications to launch with the P800 does not finish until the end of October it would have seemed unlikely that the phone will be out until November in any quantities.
Also way back in July there was a post somewhere which suggested that the P800 was expected by a German wholesaler that month, at the time I was talking to one of the companies building a software component for the P800 who told me that they were not expecting the P800 to be shipping until pre Xmas.
I expect this is the jurnos  looking for more bad news following Ericsson's negative comments about SE rather than real facts
I don't really know any more than you about SE offerings what I do know is they have more than one Symbian phone project, therefore I wouldn't be suprised to hear an announcement to that effect shortly.
In summary Symbian phones announced or available:
Nokia 9210
Nokia 9210i
Nokia 9290
Nokia 7650
Nokia 3650
Sony Ericsson P800
Symbian phones almost certainly on the way (not yet announced and the dates are speculative).
Motorola Paragon (launch with Hutchison's 3G network as a UIQ phone) (Q4 2002)
Motorola Low End Smartphone (Q3 2003) [a bit on the hmm maybe side!]
Possibly other Motorola 7650 type phones
Motorola Paragon 2 (Q4 2003)
Sony Ericsson Stork (possible Japan only) (Q2 2003)
Sony Ericsson Something else (a lower end Symbian phone) (maybe very soon)
Nokia 7650i (Q4 2002 / Q1 2003)
Nokia Hilden (9310) (best guess is announcement spring next year with a Q3 release).
Nokia Cameron - ould be the 3650 - but The Reg suggest this will be a non camera Series 60 phone.
Siemens SL60 (a simens Series 60 phone)
Siemens something else?
Panasonic - Series 60 phone (Q2 2003?)
Samsung (possinly a UIQ phone on the way)
Sanyo (a UIQ phone and a Series 60).
Adding all this up gives us about 20 phones which is getting a lot nearer to what Symbian said would be avialable on the Symbian platform in the next year or so... It also makes shipments of 15 million+ Symbian units suddenly seem not only realistic but passable...
I guess I should write this up as a comment / analysis story.
Interesting 😊.
Could the Nokia Cameron (Camera with no backwards?) be the 6650 mentioned elsewhere?
I thought Samsung had signed up for series 60 but they could be doing UIQ as well.
I did not realise that Sanyo were still looking at Symbian. I know they displayed a prototype Symbian PDA a couple of years ago but I've heard nothing since. If they are on board as well this is more good news. 😃
In the beginning of November Nokia has its annual Mobile Internet Conference. Let's see what happens this year... 😉 Two years ago the 9210 was officially launch there, if I remember correctly.
...isn't the 'Hilden' phone supposed to be the Nokia 9510?
...isn't the 'Hilden' phone supposed to be the Nokia 9510?
Could well be, basically the sucessor to the 9210, I was just trying to indicate that by calling it the 9310.

The p800 will be released begin 2003. That means no Q4 2002.
Hello :
You know where can i buy a P800, online if its possible.
A cloectiom of links will be god posted here.
Thnks
:x
According to vodaphone 'new concept' store in Watford the P800 UK release has been delayed until March.
On the good side it has apparently finally been certified by the networks.
This sounds like the nokia HDW-1 headset, by the time it was ready for release model 2 was developed/announced. Mind you this has'nt been release either!
The compaq IPAQ looks more and more interesting. (at least to us in the UK ).
Steve.
P.S. See EXPANSYS.COM. - I've used them a few times, good service.
Hi,
Just bought my P800 on two days ago, on the day it was launched here in Malaysia. It was avaialble in Hong Kong about two weeks ago, and in Singapore last week.
Great little smartphone -- sms GPRS email browser all worked within a very short setup time of less than 3 hours. Given my experience with a Handspring Treo and a Toshiba e740 PPC, this has been a great experience 😊 .
The major problem encountered thus far has been trying to sync it with Widows Outlook on my PC. 😞
Currently, I use Chapura and it works fine for my Treo running Palm OS 3.5.2 and the Toshiba running PPC 2002.
Tried to sync but the following messages popped up:
. CapMan.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows
. audevicemgr.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows
. Dr. Watson was unable to proceed. It is possible that process exited before Dr. Watson could attach to it.
.Windows 2000 returned error code = 87
Any suggestion on how to overcome the problem would be much appreciated.
Best
Khairil
