Hello
I would like to know which file in P800 that contains SMS, MMS and EMAILS that stored on the phone. Thank you!
OB
check this folder:
c:\system\mail
it has everything inside
Thanks for your reply. I have tried to copy over the file from c:\system\mail from P800 to P900. It seems like it is this right folder because I have lots of SMS in P800 and the file size of the folder is much larger than the only on my P900.
HOWEVER......after I copied from P800 to P900, I still can't see the SMSs.....=( Any idea?!?
Oh, I found out that the file named INDEX is the one which has big difference in file size. However, I couldn't copy it over. I don't know why. Anyone here in SYMBIAN forum know how to deal with it? Thanks!
don't think it's possible to copy the Mail folder from a P800 to P900, I've tried it between 2 P800 and it worked, but guess the P900 has a different naming (coding) for the mail folder, that will prevent this process to succeed
anyway it you want to copy any of the system or data files, then follow these steps:
1. put your phone on the cradle
2. start Backup & Restore
3. open your PC File Manager
4. start a dummy backup
5. when the phone restarts and when it starts backing up press Cancel on your PC screen
6. the phone will be on the turn on screen, keep it this way
7. in the PC File Manager start brwsing C:\syetem\data or C:\system\mail and copy whatever you want
but if you got through it and got your SMS, MMS, emails transfered and worked in your P900 then plz let us know 😊
good luck
Thanks HAndyguy,
I saw your thread somewhere else on this trick to paste some files onto P900 using dummy backup. I tried to copy the whole MAIL folder from P800 and paste it into P900. The process was successful. When I go to SMS section in my P900, as you know P900 will display part of the msg in the SMS on that screen, on the list of received SMS, it displays all the SMS from my P800 but unfortunately, I canot open it! It says something like UNEXPECTED xxx END OF FILE xxx..... that's the only problem.
I think it is most likely as what you said that the naming/coding of P900 and P800 is different. Hopefully some one can find out what's wrong with it.
Isn't there an SMS manager that would allow you to export your SMS's to your PC from the P800, then do the opposite for the P900? I've not used it so don't know the specifics, but I believe such software is available. It might be easier than trying to play around with system files.
YAh, there is. But is US$19.99 or something like that. Simple piece of software with such an expensive price. I personally think is not worth, hehe...
but still that would only save your SMSs, no MMS niether emails... so don't think is't worth it!
is that so?? Such a rip off! That piece of thing should cost only 055. I guess basically once you understand the structure of the file, then you can create one program to do the same thing. =)
So, has anyone find out yet????
By the way handyguy, I found this discussion:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/18596/
and you mentioned something about
filestore.dat.txt
What is that? I couldn't find it in my .ecs file at all. :frown:

try checking it again.
btw which version of PC Suite you're using? and did you open the file as described in that thread using winzip?

I had the same problem. I knew how to copy the files across and I could see all my messages, but when I tried to open any of them I got the same error message.
I have decided I am not really that bothered as none of the messages was important, but I would still be interested if someone found a solution.
U know what Lotus49.....oh no...is not that I found out the way...hehe...is just that, I had that problem with unexpected end of file thing when I tried to open the SMS from P800, after that when I copied back the original files (which I pulled them out and put them on my PC before I copied the P800 ones onto it) the original sms also canot open, not only the P800 one! Bizzare! I thought it would be ok if I put back the original P900 files.
handyguy, I use P900's backup & restore program. It is 1.12.1.1, mean anything to you?
Cheers guys! Keep trying!
I've just tried backing up my data (I had to do my regular backup), and checked the file again.
I opened the .ecs file with Winace, and checked the bottom of the compressed folder, and there was the filestore.dat.txt sitting!
I'm sure it's there in your folder but you might can't find it as you have thousands of files in there.. anyway I use the same ver as it's the latest
try searching again for that file 😉
hm..i will try to look at it again. At the same time, I have something for you who want to backup their SMS. Please email me at =)
is it like a secret job?!?!
