Upgrading to what? to get multimedia advantage

13 replies · 2,818 views · Started 20 September 2002

Hi,

I use 9210 with v. 3.54 to present videos and slide shows.

I use Restart and Switch to free up the memory, but still I've lost many customers, who didn't want to wait until I get more memory on my Comm to show them e. g. nim-videos.

Should I upgrade to what firmware to have more memory for multimedia? Or is it better to stay with 3.54?

Is a 9210i a better way for multimedia?
Is it possible to upgrade to 9210i on the Nokia center or do I need to sell my 9210 and buy 9210i to do so?

There was many upgrade-speech on that forum, so I hope to be helped!

Thanks

Pardon, one question more: if I buy AppMan (via Rafe's site, of cause) will the compressing help me to play multimedia quicker?

Thank you all
I use realone player and I don't have memory problems, try it!
So do I, but I produce videos myself and those for RealOne are much bigger and of a much lower quality than those I get with Converter Pro!

I never had any problems playing nims before ... How much memory do you have?
If you don't have enough to play a simple nim file, then something is going wrong with your 9210 I guess 😉
You can try doing what I do:
Everytime I use Extras, internet,office, messaging,calender,contacts I kill it with shift+ctrl+chr+k.
That way you'll never have one of those running to consume memory (they'll just start a bit slower next time).
If you add videoplayer and presentation viewer to the desk you'll get the speed and memory you need (I hope) .

In short: I never have more running then 'tel' and 'desk' and of course the app(s) I want the use.

Greetz and good luck

Dazler

I never got around to using Video on the move, and quite frankly, even with PDA's that do have MP3 capability, I would still choose a minidisc player over crappy MP3 that drains batteries. If it's really important, then a Pocket PC with a 1gig microdrive is what you need (Look at the Toshiba e470), I don't think the 9210 is quite there yet for anything more than short clips, nonwithstanding people who've scrunched movies into the tiny pixel box! 😊

I really do as Dazler advises: I do have tel and app I work acctually as the sole programms opend only (even more, than I process a HTML file with a dozen of pictures and have YEDIT and WebBrowser simultaneously open, I even close the tel!)

I have a laptop and a PocketPC, but sometimes I don't have them around me, especially on our presentation on the fly.

On the presenation I send faxes and SMS and emails, call people and am being called, use calender and contacts and so on. Then suddenly there is a customer, who wants to see a small version of videos, which we sell on a computer CD..

My videos on the 9210 are about 3,5 Mb and work well alone, but I have so much open! So I beg pardon for a moment and open Switcher and kill all the apps then start videos ... and get quite ofen a message box "Memory full!". So I restart the Nokia, it lasts 1..2..3 mins and when I'm ready at last the customer is away!!

So my question was: to what firmware virsion should I upgrade (if I shud) to encounter that problem not so often?

Then I think there isn't much to do, the firmware update doesn't give you that much extra memory.
You could try the 9210i, maybe that will work for you.

So, dear Dazler, is your opinion it'd better to stay by 3.54 if not buying 9210i?

Upgrading can't hurt, but I don't think it will help you.

Maybe if we ask nice the pursons behind Appman could make a extra function in the update like the Boot-F5 from the old dos.

A function that kills everything and boots up a chosen application.
For your video app or for opera and stuff like that. I think many people would want something like that.

I know Zeus could make a function like this (hint) 😊

And if I change from Switcher to AppMan, d'u think i could get some additional functions to free up more memory as with Switcher?

Best way to find out is to try the trial of appman.
Because it stays in memory (until you unload it) I have less memory free with appman then with switcher (because I allways opened and closed switcher)

I still find it strange that your vids won't run :s If you kill everything with switcher you should get something of 3mb of memory free. Some apps don't show up in switcher, maybe you have some of those running (smart memory for example)?

Yes, i guess so! So if AppMan can trace ALL apps and processes it'd worthy considering for me!
Another factor is that people say here if you call and send SMS and emails even after you have closed all afterwards there is still rubbish in memory.

So only restarting wil help.

That's a great idea of yours, no doubt, to let developers design a restart feature with satrting a programm. 😃

Yes appman can trace all apps and can even compress memory (automatic if you want)

Let's hope any developer thinks the same 😉
