New to a 7650 and Symbian-questions?

Hi! 😃 I'm new to all this having just aquired a 7650 for 40 as an upgrade from my 3210, and I have a few questions about this phone, if anyone can help?

Fistly, I got no software or anything with it-what should I have had/where can I get it? I've downloaded the Nokia PC suite and edited the exclusion list file to back up everything except the "system/temp" folder" by removing every other line in the file-I was right wasn't i?

Secondly, I'm getting occasional "system errors" on this phone, and it had a few "Known issues" when I was offered it-for instance the "Certificates" bit tells me the "database corrupted". Can this be fixed easily?

Thirdly, the seller demo'd BT to me on this phone, and the day after (the day he sold it to me) it stopped working. I just get "Unable to perform bluetooth operation". Is this recoverable, and if so, how?

Fourth, I've read about the "hard" and "soft" reset. Being used to PC's and Windows it's a familiar concept.. 😉 The seller left me a lot of legacy stuff on the phone..can I remove it and turn this phone back to "plain and simple" condition using the "tools","orig. Phone settings" option, or would the *#7xxx "hard format" reset be what I need?

If I did that, would the phone effectively be utterly blank, or does it retain a non-eraseable copy of the "core" OS to allow it to be used as normal straight after? I wouldn't like to do this and then find I have to reinstall the OS, and don't have the tools.

Fifth, memory management. I've freed up 2.1mb of the 4mb RAM in the phone. I was advised "be safe, keep it free". Right?

Last but not least-the "Safe Mode" boot. This intrigues me. Holding down "ABC" as it fires up seems to do nothing for me-how could I tell if it IS in safe mode? What exactly does safe mode do?

The firmware is "V 3.16, 15-08-02, NHL-2NA" if it helps.

Many thanks..the phone may be old, but it's growing on me despite it's problems. I like gadgets.. 😉

The certificate & Bluetooth errors could be cleared with the format (and it will, indeed, result in a loss of all user data; the phone is, after that, more or less in the same condition as it was when it left the factory - usable, but no contacts, messages, settings, etc.).

If it doesn't help, you could go to the nearest authorized Nokia service center and have the firmware upgraded (yours is quite old and has problems fixed in the latest release).

You can try to locate such places through here:

Thankyou for that! 😊 I just did the "tools, orig.settings" and the phone rebooted...still no Bluetooth..😊 I take it by "the format" you mean the *#7xxx format? I'm tempted to just accept bluetooth loss as a tradeoff for not running the risk of performing that operation to be honest.

What is the risk level of that procedure killing the average 7650, if it's left on a charger during that would you say?

I tried a 6600 code for bluetooth address revealing..it showed an address, so I assume the hardware is fine. I can't see how or why it should just stop or be irrrepairably damaged by software really..but from what I've read, BT and the 7650 usually seems to lead to "non-recoverable" phones.

I like the phone..I love the idea..and it's an early phone, so I'm happy with it...it's just not as bombproof as I'd like.. 🙄 Heyho..thankyou again for your help..😊

Id say its pretty safe to do a hard reset(*#7370#),i've done it quite a few times and i would advise you to leave the phone on the charger will performing the procedure.

I'll do that tonight then..fingers crossed. Now my IR is playing up.. 😡 I can connect using the nokia suite and do a 2 way transfer, but if I try to send from the phone to my laptop or a laserjet printer, I get "transfer failed".

Still like the phone, still want it to work.. 😉

A reset will help, but you really want to get it to a service centre soon to get the firmware updated. It makes a huge difference for a tiny outlay (about 15). Any Carphone Warehouse with a service desk can do it for you and it doesn't take long. My partners' 7650 was also a "pre-owned" model and, when she first got it, the bluetooth kept failing, it kept dropping it's network connection without warning (so she couldn't receive calls and didn't know she couldn't receive calls!) and the battery life was all over the place. Since the firmware update it's been perfect.

15?? Is that all! Theres one down the road. 😊 Worth a thought. Whats a stable firmware to go to though?

Well, I did the full reformat! Thanks to GhostDog for the reassurance-it went fine. Totally blanked and reloaded, with 3.5 mb free now! It seems quicker. I have full certificates back, with no corruption messages..😊

Bluetooth however is still dead. IR seems to be working on my laptop, but I tried sending a note to our HP laserjet 6p, and the 2100-it worked once yesterday, now I get "communication error". Heyho.

Updating firmware is very tempting..but it works OK for now..😊 Quicker too. Its nice to know theres nothing "previous" on there. My boss has a 6600, and the firmware is no more than 4 versions up from mine!!

Now I just need to figure how to reinstall the games..😉 Thanks again!
