An online friend of mine told me he's got a 4.05 firmware.. i told him i only have 3.30. Is he just pulling my leg? I havent heard of new firmwares from nokia or in any website.

Firmware upgrades are free if your game deck is under warranty- just take your game deck and proof-of-purchase to your nearest authorized Nokia repair center, Nokia Care Center or authorized Nokia service point. The latest version of N-Gage firmware varies from country to country, although most countries will have version 4.03 of N-Gage firmware available. Version 4.04 and version 4.05 of the N-Gage's firmware is still quite new, but should be available from most repair centers within 1-2 months (if it is not already)...

Oh yeah- firmware upgrades aren't generally announced as firmware upgrades are usually only carried out when a phone is repaired and on request... You can find out what firmware your Nokia phone is running by typing *#0000# on the "stand-by" screen.

Sorry for being ignorant, but what difference does the firmware make? What issues would an upgrade address?

Usually it addressess problems/issues/bugs discovered in earlier versions. No new features/functionality, in general. If you have not encountered problems with whatever firmware version you happen to have, there is no need to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading.

Oh thanx N/A. My QD's only 1 week old so at the moment i haven't encountered any problems other than the slight lag after i press a button. Would this possibly be solved with an upgrade?
Just out of curiosity, the people who've posted here so far, are u guys using the N-gage or the QD? Coz my QD i just bought like last week and i've got v03.15, 27-04-2004. While u guys have already like version 4+...

I have the original N-Gage which is currently running version 4.03 firmware...

OH i see... haha... all of you got me worried for a moment there... Coz i thought the QDs in your countries already have so new software... But will firmware upgrades necessarily increase the speed of hardware? Coz although i'm not complaining, i realize my QD takes some time to respond when i press menu, contacts or even dial a number... :/

Generally-speaking, a firmware upgrade will not increase the speed of the phone whilst navigating through menus, etc...

Not exactly true.A lot of manufacturers when working on a tight deadline are releasing their phones half baked so they optimize the OS and fix bugs trough a firmware updates.V 4.39 was a revolution for my 7650.Log managment has visable improvements as did the device in general.

I have a NGAGE DQ with SW ver 3.00 30-4-2004.. (USA). I have not had any problems as of yet..

Oh i see, thanx for the info Ghostdog, so i suppose its no harm asking the Nokia guys in my country if there are newer updates? Coz i'd certainly hope my N-gage could be just a LIttLE bit faster heh... Do the Nokia people charge for such a service, or do i have to just show my warranty and it'll be free?

And hey Loopster, i suppose urs doesn't lag at all? Coz i have a friend who i got my QD with, apparently his is even laggier than mine by almost a full second, most evident when calling up his contacts even though he has less.

Yes, firmware upgrades are free if your game deck is still under warranty. I usually get my firmware updated every 3 months whilst my phones are under warranty...

I'm popping by the Nokia Care Centre today to see if they've got any updates on firmware. Not sure if it'll speed the hardware up, but i wanna do it early since if they upgrade their gonna wipe out everything on ur onboard memory, so i might as well do it early when its still practically empty rather than later when i'll have lots of things to back up heh 🙄 will update the forum if there're any improvements or DEprovements :icon14:

Most of the NSCs at least in my country, backup your device,do a firmware update, and then restore the backup so you will get the device in its original state.

Gee you're lucky- none of the Nokia Care Centers back-up phones in my country (Australia)...

Same. None of the Nokia care centres in my country (Singapore) have that service either...
I checked the NSC yesterday, they don't have newer software than the one i already have in my phone. They suggested that they could reload the software on my phone, although they couldn't be sure if it'd help. I turned them down not becoz it'd erase my data and stuff, but becoz i'd have to wait THREE HOURS for my precioussssss to come back to me....

Im taking mine in to be upgraded tomorrow. I expect the delay to load contacts is cause nokia built in a delay where the phone waits to see if you press * to lock the keypad

Yeah that's understandable, but my friend's takes a whole 2 seconds to come out. He's got less contacts that me, but when he searches for a contact, it takes another half second for anything to show up on the screen per letter in the search. So i think the QD has some SERIOUS software reworking to do. I've made so many complaints to Nokia that i've memorized their careline hotline. They better have significant improvements in the next firmware upgrade...

You can just press the D-Pad in the center. The contacts application will pop up almost immediately.

Hi everyone, this seems like a nice place to discuss N-Gage, me and my friend each got an N-Gage, 1 is the original and the other is QD. seem to be having probelm with the original NGAGE, keeps going white screen every so often, and once it did, the phone just gets stuck there, nothing works but take out the battery, once you put the battery back in, and turn on the unit, it goes white screen again. anyone know how to fix this problem? I already send it back to the shop twice, seems they just reinstall the firmware, but the same problem comes back after awhile. Is this a common problem with the original ngage?

No way! N-Gage isn't a bug phone. It shouldn't be doing things like that. It happened to me few times by playing cracked red faction, but it was because of the old firmware. I've got 3.30, not good one. I had a lot of nokias, and the only one that was certainly a bug phone was 7110. I had 3 fw updates and nothing helped. 7110s were all the same. N-gage isn't like that.

And to backups before updating fw in nokia care centres, they do it in Czech republic. But they don't recommend it. That's all

Just to let you all out there know, I buggered my QD up the other day, and then had to send it off to nokia.

Now its got Firmware:

V 04.00
08-07-2004
RH-29

So owners of QD's reading this, take your QD down to your nearest Club Nokia service shops.

I have a qd that has V3.15 RH-29, i have problems, (sometimes) while in the middle of a particular game the device suddenly tells me "it is unsafe to remove the memory card"-warning (or to that effect)or sometimes restarts by itself, to my suprise i did not do anything like the device told me. is this bug can be fixed by upgrading the device'sfirmware? and if you have any xperience about this, wat firmware would you recommend that fixes my problem?
thanks for any help.
