New: PhotoAcute for Nokia 3650

14 replies · 5,379 views · Started 18 May 2004

PhotoAcute is a software based way of turning the camera of a Nokia 3650 from 300 kpx to 1.2 mpx. It works by taking multiple images and then using software processing (which can take up to few minutes) to produce one high resolution photo. The authors are working on support for other phones. We'll have a quick review of the software shortly to see if its claims live up to reality.

Author Notes:
PhotoAcute significantly improves the quality of pictures snapped by the phone built-in camera.
By applying state-of-art image processing techniques, it allows to achieve up to 4-times increase in resolution, practically turning the 300 kilopixel camera into 1.2 Megapixel one.

PhotoAcute features:

* 1280x960 picture size instead of 640x480 (it's not a zoom!)
* Pictures with fine details that are usually invisible/indistinguishable
* Automatic picture noise reduction

PhotoAcute utilizes a unique image processing technologies developed by Russian scientists, formerly used to work in the area of data processing in nuclear physics.

The technology combines high quality results with low cpu and memory usage, which makes it possible to be used in resource-limited devices.

Unique algorithms developed by our team allowed to solve a problem commonly known as a "superresolution problem", which would normally take hours of CPU time on modern supercomputers, within a framework of mobile device where CPU and memory resources are severely limited.

Nuclear physics??? BAHAHAHA that sounds so fishy it's funny 😃

They've stumbled across an algorithm which allows the processors of a mobile device to do the work that would normally take a supercomputer???
HAHAHAHAHAHA pull the other one guys!

I'll be trying this at home tonight, but not holding my breath! I bet I'll get a 'hahaha fooled ya' message when I install it.

I installed it on my 3650 and was promptly greeted by a:
"photoacute: System error!" message.

I'll email their support address and see if I get a reply...

I've installed in on my 6600, and it's working. I've yet to Bluetooth the picture to my pc so i can actually see the result on a big screen but it seems to have worked. the resulting image is 1260 x 960.

UPDATE: Their support line responded very promptly and sent me a version that's supposed to generate log files. But this one crashes with "app closed" before I even get the splash screen, and no log files. I expect they'll keep working with me, since the program is specifically supported on the 3650... Anyone know where I can download version 1.00 and see if that older version does any better?

Very interested to see this! I take back all I've written above if it works!

Make sure you upload it here asap! 😊

Hello!

I tested the software with my SX1 and I couldn't notice much real improvement. Of course the new pictures do have more pixels, but you can achieve this effect with normal image editing software (like photoshop) as well.

Nevertheless the technological background seems to be more profound than one could think at first.
I googled for the expression "superresolution problem" used on their webpage which sounded like a marketing trick to me. But I found the following scientific publication among others.
Pdf about superresolution problem

But still I doubt the supercomputer abilities of my mobilephone! 🙄 😉 😃 Allthough I like it very much!

Have a nice week!

Jens 😊

Hi, I've tested the software on my 3650 and it's great.

I think it's better than just zoom it in photoshop.

Just take a photo with the app and try it for yourself on your pc. As the app also saves a 640x480 picture, you can send that also to your pc and zoom it. And then you can compare these two, as I did.

And there are really some more details visible, especially in the background. Of course, it is not that good like a real 1280x960 cam, but it's better than a zoom.

I downloaded the trial version through the wap browser on my phone during a moment of boredom, took some photos and compared. must admit it, they are about twice as good as the regular nokia camera app. It even installed with onscreen help.
But it is only good for inanimate objects, and you must hold the camers still for about 5 very loooong seconds while it takes the pics.
I think that it will be good to have and use when appropriate though.

very nice, bigger pic on screen, and sharper, so once skrunk to fit better size photo, it is amazing.

dont need to buy a megapixel phone!

only good for still pics tho

A megapixel phone eg 7610 is much more better than this photoacute software. The 7610's camera is much more brighter than this photoacute.Photoacute just make the picture bigger, noise reduction and more but it doesnt make the picture more brighter(exposure still the same).Colour still the same.!!!!!!!

hey guys help me please, i want my photo acute removed from my phone because im runnig out of memory, but i can't freakin' remove it, it always says "removal failed". how will i remove this please help me. and can i get a registration code??? i kinda lost mine hehe

Why do you need a code if you want to remove it? Anyway, you should just mail the developer, if you really bought the app before he will give you the code again.
