Nokia and Ericsson make progress on wideband-CDMA

According to this ZDnet article Nokia and Ericsson have made progress with "Wideband code division multiple access (w-CDMA) " 3G networks. It says that Nokia will make a statement saying that the w-CDMA cell phones that they have been using for testing have met the required 3G standards.

Hopefully this will mean they will announce more details of their 3G devices. There have been hints posted that a 6650 device based on Series 60 will be announced tomorrow, so perhaps this will be confirmed. As they say "devices", I still have a hope that they may announce the rumoured 'Hilden' 92XX successor 😃.

Much as teh 9210 successor is what a lot of people are anting, part of me wants them to concentrate on stuff like the 7650, 3650 and now the 6650. These phones are going to sell a LOT more than any 9210 replacememnt, and garner more funding for Symbian, and more market share and prescence for Symbian OS in general.

One the funds are there, and the new technologies are in place, *then* let's see an all singing all dancing replacememnt. I doubt Nokia will abandon the Communicator as a series (look at the 9000, 9000i, 9110, 9210 product line). A large amount of time between devices, but each with clear technical benefits.

Bring it on, but only when it can carry all the new bits and pieces.

It appears that the 6650 despite the X650 numbering is NOT a Symbian OS / Series 60 phone.
