Giving up the original and buying the QD

10 replies · 2,708 views · Started 29 June 2004

Hi guys,

I am thinking about selling my original NGage and exchanging it for a QD. But I have heard that it does not have:

1. MP3 player
2. Radio
3. USB cable

What about the MP3 players which are available on the net, are they different from the one which is already present in the original NGage?

Cant I get a freeware radio app on the net for the QD and finally

How then do I connect the QD to my PC? Cant I get a separate USB cable to connect it to the PC?

I think the forum already has plenty of answers for your questions, if only u spent more time reading the other threads.... but i'm in a good mood tonight...

Yep it doesn't have an inbuilt mp3 player, nor radio nor USB connectivity.
The Mp3 players that can work on the original Ngage will work on the QD.
Freeware u'll have to look around, so far not any that i know of...
No u can't coz the QD doesn't have anything for u to plug any kind of USB cable to the PC, u could either buy a bluetooth dongle for the PC so that u can use the provided Nokia Bluetooth PC suite to connect ur QD to ur PC via bluetooth, or u could get an MMC card reader and an MMC card, a little more troublesome since u can't sync things like ur mailbox and calendar, but it gets the job done.

As far as I'm concerned that would be a bad choice. You should rather wait for the next *real* N-Gage successor.

Yes. For one thing you wont get stereo output when you plug in the headset.

Eh, do you mean streaming radio over GPRS? Ouch! A radio needs to be implemented into the hardware you know.

No. Your only option is Bluetooth, or you could get a cheap MMC card reader.

Just curious, would u recommend someone who's never had an ngage to get the game deck or the QD? If that person were say a casual user, plays a decent amount of games, plays music, travels around so wants a reasonably small phone...

I've recommended the QD to a couple of people that were mainly interested in playing games on their phone, but usually I would recommend the original because it is just so much more fun. I actually don't consider the QD to be smaller, I mean I know it is, but I'd rather prefer carrying a thin phone with a larger areal, than a smaller more chubby phone. The QD is a bit thicker than the original, and to me that makes it more uncomfortable to have in my pants pocket, makes a bigger dent... (hmm is that really a bad thing though... 😃 ).

I haven't actually tried the QD though, but it should be better when it comes to pure gaming, because of a more powerful battery, and MMC hot-swap. But when it comes to all around entertainment I prefer the original. I also think the original looks much better, more "classy". Nokia, for some reason, also left out tri-band in the QD.

So basically, I would only recommend the QD to those people who really don't care about MP3 and radio, and don't need tri-band.

I see, thanx for ur opinion Raven. Coz i have the QD, and though i never owned the original n-gage, i did have the fortune of being able to exchange with my friend and use his while he used my crappy 6100 (😃) for about 2 weeks so i'm quite familiar with the original n-gage. And so far i'm very happy and satisfied with the QD, coz i still feel the thicker QD isn't that noticeable, its smaller so i don't have to worry about shallow pockets, its rubber grips prevent it from slipping out of pockets easily, the battery lasts eons compared to the original, and in terms of button placement and feel, it is one of the changes in my opinion beats the original hands down. But otherwise yeah i'd agree with you the original looks MUCH classier, especially if u get some of those REALLY COOL covers from allack 😊
I don't care about the radio coz i already own a digital Sony transistor with Mega Bass and the works, and tho i DO care about MP3, i'm the kind who's willing to accept decrease in quality for mobile entertainment (So that i can truly appreciate an immobile home entertainment system in its true'est essense 😃 ), though i still think the mono quality isn't at all noticeable on the QD speaker. And thankfully Asians only need dual band 😉

Hi guys,

after a careful search and lots of reading and stuff I came to the conclusion that the QD is not worth buying when compared with the original 🙄 I realized that my baby's got all that I will ever need.. So for now its godbye QD

Are the buttons (placement) really that good though? I've heard a few people comment that the buttons are a little too cramped... Anyway, I guess that's individual, depending on the size of your hands/fingers.

Hehe, I did actually order the black Nokia OK cover from Allack the other day. 😊 Now, my N-Gage will look even classier:

I see. About the sound output though I was talking about how it sounds through the headset of course. Through the speaker you will get the same MONO sound no matter which phone you use.

I've got the original n-gage, and I'm really happy with it. If I lost it or something strange happened, I'd buy a QD, though. why? because the MP3 sucks battery life like a damn vampire. Having to recharge your battery everyday gets uncomfortable in the long run, so if you do not hear the radio, which I don't, and are going to get a sepparate MP3 player, with the QD you get a much greater screen (I've compared), and a longer battery life. The only real problem with the QD is the uncomfortable keypad (too much buttons in too little space). And well, the classic one DOES look much better.

I hope my opinion was useful. Mind you, I won't actually get a QD because I find the improvements are not enough reason to spend 200 euros.

Thanx for the comments Raven and opinions Clozeone, always good to know what other people think, especially the original N-Gage owners. I thank you for being pragmatic about it, coz some original N-Gage owners i've spoken to be4 are just SO full-of-their-N-Gages. To them they won't even look at some of the advantages of the QD, even if there aren't that many to talk about :/

Yeah, NICE cover Raven 😃 wish SOMEONE'd come up with cool QD covers like that which are available in my country... :/

Oh and ClozeOne, i'm used to the button placement i guess, furthermore i've had smaller nokia phones than that so this button arrangement suits me just fine 😊
