is it possible to somehow alter teh screen saver so that there is some indication that you have missed a call/sms while away? fortunately if you have missed an alarm, it continues playing a tune, so that works ok
on my sl55, it had a icon in bottom corner of the screen when displaying the screen saver

I'm afraid not. It's a bit of a drawback of the P900's screensaver
i cant get round this by turning off the screen saver/power saver, but, is this going to bugger the screen up..or does it just mean i'll use more power. i dont mind the 2nd one, but would prefer not to experience the first!
No problem for the screen. The term "screensaver" is a bit old actually, since to the newer displays it isn't a problem to have the same thing on the screen for a long time. So it is actually just a power saver...
