6600 problems with backup & general malfunctioning...

I am having problems using the backup feature on the PC Suite & also general problems with the phone freezing and once in awhile the screen fades to white and the phone restarts itself spontaneously.

My phone's firmware revision is: 3.42.1. I am not keen on sending this phone in for a firmware upgrade as I know how long these things tend to take and I cannot be without my phone for more than a couple of days.
I have tried installing an updated version of the PC Suite (1.1) using the method described elsewhere in this forum with the reg cleaning utility supplied by Nokia on 2 pc's with no success. The PC Suite will not back up the phone. I continuously get an error "An unexpected error has occurred while backing up data". I have also tried backing up the phone memory to the mmc card. It completes about 10% before the phone completely freezes. So I have no way to back up the phone and no way to backup the data to the mmc.
If anyone has helpful advice or info, this would be much appreciated...

Thanks!

I quit trying to backup the phone using PC Suite..
I use it just to transfer images and files from and to the phone, and even though it's connection detection lasts a few minutes to detect that my phone is trying to connect...

For backups I'm using SmartvCard, SmartvCal, and FExplorer to copy the files where my todo and notes are stored... Then I transfer them to my PC..

Don't know if there's a better way..

Thanks for the reply. I do have FExplorer installed, and have used it to transfer some of the files from my phone memory to my mmc card. Can you or anyone give me details as to what files need to be copied across to backup things like phone settings, bookmarks & software registrations? I have decided to try and fully reformat the phone to see if this will solve some of the problems I am having.
Another problem is that the phone came preinstalled with Opera browser. So it is obviously registered to that IMEI number. If I reformat the phone this reg info & the software would probably be lost, & even though I have an install file for Opera, it is the updated version and not the original that came preinstalled on the phone. So how does one reformat the phone without losing the registration info for preinstalled software?

Hi,
using FExplorer, never cut or delete a file.. You may have to format your phone to fix some errors caused by missed files..
Always try to manage your files using "File mngr." that comes with your n6600..
When copying system files, you'll have to use FExplorer and remember to copy the files, not to cut them!

I don't know the files you have to copy because I'm new to Symbian, but if a "tar" exists things would be simplier..

The other questions I have no idea..

This is currently happening to me as well. I think the problem is that the mmc card is corrupt. If I remove the mmc from the phone, PC Suite will backup the phone to my PC. Also, when I put the mmc card in a "8-in-1" card reader, I can browse the contents, and even copy some of it to my PC, but it fails randomly, so that is why I think the card is corrupt.

If you can get to a Nokia Service Centre, the firmware upgrade takes about 20 minutes. Nothing like the hassles with some types of phone.

I don't think a firmware upgrade is a solution for all the problems...

About the MMC problem.. I think the FS it uses is FAT, have you ever tried to run scandisk or something on it?? Symbian seems to crash MMC FS in some way..

About SmartvCard.. It does not save the "defaults" (numbers) for a contact... It does not save if you change some of the labels in one contact..

Scandisk finds no errors with the card, but when I run chkdsk, it does find an invalid directory and file entry, but when I run chkdsk with the /F option to fix the problem, chkdsk just stops. If I run chkdsk again after that, the PC reboots!

I think my only option now is to format the mmc card :frown: :?

I have finally solved the problem of pc suite being unable to see the phone.

Do the following:
Go to "My bluetooth places" (Start, Programs....)
Click on "View Devices in Range"
Select your phone
Right Click and select "connect" or "connect bluetooth serial port"
You will get a message "The bluetooth seriel port Com0 is now connected..."
DO NOT CLICK ON "OK" - but wait, about 30 to 60 seconds.

I repeat -*****VERY IMPORTANT*****--

DO NOT CLICK ON "OK" - but wait, about 30 to 60 seconds.

*****(READ THE ABOVE CAREFULLY)**********

If you click OK you will get an error message "The view my bluetooth services connection failed...."
After about 60 seconds a meesage will appear from your system tray telling you "Bluetooth Connection Successful"
Now click OK - You will still get an error message. Ignore this.
Now click ALT-TAB until you see the program "PC Suite - Going online"
Click OK
Now your PC and phone are connected and you can synch and back up.

Thank you for the reply!

Unfortunately, I still get the same error (even happens with IR). :con? I think in my case, the MMC card is really corrupt.
