Phone stolen - can I save contacts?

6 replies · 2,956 views · Started 15 July 2004

Hi guys,
I've just had my 3650 stolen, so I've lost my address book etc. I do, however, have a backup of the phone made by PC suite. Can I retrieve the data from this somehow?

Thanks!

Paul

Yes you should be able too. I can recall exactly how things work with the 3650. You need to find where the files are backed up and find c:/system/date/contacts.cdb

Thats the contacts file with your contacts. If you get another phone you should be able to copy that back into place (or you could restore the entire backup). Alternatively I think you should be able to view that file in the emulator (put in the right directoroy). You'll need the Series 60 sdk for the emulator.

Thanks for the response!

Do you happen to know
A: What the name of the backup file would be
and
B: Where I could find an emulator (I'm about to do a forum search, but if anyone feels like saving me some time :P )

I can't remember how the 3650 backup works. It may not even store them as files. It may be in a big database. However if memory serves I think it may be in C:/Nokia

Emulator is at http://forum.nokia.com

No guarantees as I've not done this myself.

I've found a folder called "backup" with a whole lot of .dat files in it, with an index document. This has allowed me to identify which .dat file has my contacts... Does anyone know how I can get into this file and get the contacts out? I couldn't find the C:\System\date\contacts.cdb file at all... there doesn't seem to be one in existance on my computer...

I've also got the emulator running, but I have no idea how to use it to access the contacts file, or how to get it to be recognised by PC-suite...

If anyone could help me that would be great!

Thanks!

Paul

Sorry to ressurect my thread, but I've found something that might help me, but don't know how to utilise it!

In my Nokia directory I've now found a folder called "backup" which contains hundreds of numbered .dat files, as well as a file listing that tells me 102.dat contains my contacts.cdb file. When I open this (102.dat) in notepad, I get a bunch of junk, but interspersed with this are the names from my contacts and the numbers, but all out of order and messed around.

Is there any way to extract the contacts.cdb file from the dat file?

If not, does anyone who has an S60 phone feel like being charitable and restoring my contacts onto their phone before sending them back to me? (And then deleting them from their phone? :P )

Thanks for your help guys.

Paul

Don't forget to report your phone stolen to your carrier so that the crook can't use the phone on your network.
