Bluetooth, is it worth it?

Hi,

I am considering buying a bluetooth dongle for use with my Nokia 6600, but after reading on this (and other) forum about all the problems of getting bluetooth working, I am wondering if it is worth it? Currently, I am using irda to connect my phone to my PC, and it is working fine, the only problem being that the phone must be next to the USB irda adapter.

Are there any advantages of using bluetooth instead of irda? (except for the 10-20 m range advantage of bluetooth)

Thank you!

If you are having no problems using Ir then you may as well keep it as it is highly likely you will have have problems using Bt and pc suite.

Here too, ive no problems using BT. IRDA is primitive and here in the philippines the price is really not that far from a BT Dongle. :icon14:

I dont have any problems either, but i suggested sticking with Ir as he is already using it, so the price difference between the two for him,is the total cost of the bt dongle which is pointless if Ir is giving no problems!

Personally, I would say go for it and get yourself a BT dongle. It is lovely being able to leave your phone by your bed and still connect into it and transfer files back and forth. 😊

Dongles are getting to be dirt cheap prettymuch eveywhere. My bt works fine and it's useful for more than just my phone. Unless you have a ton of different network interfaces, your bt should install and work easilly and should be pretty fast. What speed are you getting w/ ir?

It says 115200 kbs, but if that is the actual transfer speed is anyone's guess 😊

Regards,

Hello everyone!

Ok, I think I should give bluetooth a go! 😊 Currently, I can get the following dongles:

  • Cellink Bluetooth USB Adapter
  • 3Com Bluetooth USB Adapter
  • MSI USB to Bluetooth Key
  • X-MICRO USB To Bluetooth Dongle Adapter Class 1
  • X-MICRO USB To Bluetooth Dongle Adapter Class 2

Which one should I go for? Or, is there a specific one that I should try to get?

Thank you!

I'm not sure if there is a list that says what chipset is used inside most dongles so I can't tell you from what you listed which is the best option based on hardware, however I can say that I have used the D-Link adapters which come w/ Widcomm as the bluetooth software/driver and found that they work perfectly. I think you might want to look to see what software comes bundled. You may also get some better mileage if they are more compatible (ex: windows & mac, windows & linux, windows, mac, & linux).

Ok, so is that one of the issues people have. The PCsuite just happens to like the Widicomm drivers? Never had a problem, but that would be good to know 😊
