When I look at pictures on my Nokia 7610 then banding is clearly visible when I look at natural gradients as in a blue sky or faces. The 7610 should display 65k colours and the banding should not be visible.
This picture shows what it looks like on my phone (200% enlarged) (left picture) and the the same picture in 65k (24bit) colors on my pc (right picture). The difference is clearly visible.

Does the Nokia 7610 show only 256 colors?

I don't have that problem - when I transfer to pc my images quote 65k colours (in photoshop) - and views ok.
Where you 'zooming'? or was light level low? if not I suggest you get it checked for faults

If I transfer the image to my pc it also looks ok, so the image is good. The problem is that we viewing this good image on my 7610 screen I can clearly see color banding.
