SonyEricsson: PLEASE READ... how Outlook synchronisation SHOULD work!

I'm sure many of us have thought of this, and I apologise if someone has already posted a similiar message - but everytime I think about the issues with Outlook synchronisation, the more I am convinced that SonyEricsson needs to take a page from Microsoft and make the synchronisation software work like Microsoft's ActiveSync.

Instead of having to force a synchronisation of the Px00 everytime I leave the office, as long as I have a connection (via the sync base, a USB cable, or Bluetooth connection) I would have everything up-to-date in real-time, a real boon for those using ActiveSync with a PocketPC/Windows Mobile.

Am I the only one who would support this change? Not to mention adding proper support for day long events, personal folders, categories etc.... but I think I'm starting to dream now! 🙄

I think I'd settle for the synch software just working, before they start adding advanced features. Not too bothered about ActiveSynch. It has it's advantages and disadvantages. As with all things, it would be nice to have the option, but lets get the damn thing working before we start messing about with it!

mmm....yes the synch s/w is pretty poor, even for a normal phone - let alone a smart phone!

I agree... since we're getting into shortcomings regarding the sync software, can any of you confirm whether you also experience the following behaviour:

1. I used to use full sync, but sometimes found that contacts would start either disappearing or duplicating when I looked back in my Outlook contacts! To stop this, I've started doing one way syncs (from PC to phone...)

2. I read others complaining about all-day events not sync'ing - but I found that they were showing up on the phone (correctly as all-day events too), but when the phone sync'd up with the PC again, it would come up as an all day appointment in Outlook duplicating over-and-over again

3. Syncs are VERY slow, and I dare not do it when I am connected to the Exchange server over VPN, therefore I always disconnect from the LAN or VPN connection, load up Outlook in local mode and then perform the sync

I'm using Outlook 2002 with the latest sync software and firmware loads (actually of P800, but I believe behaviour is the same on the P900?).

I would be interested to find if you are finding the same problems and if there are any workarounds (or maybe I'm simply doing something wrong).

Cheers,

Lonnie

Exactly the same except that the All-day events problem refers to recurring all-day events such as birthdays, anniversaries and public holidays.

I found I could fix problem 1 by wiping out my Outlook database and then doing a forced full synch.

On 3 you could check what speed your cable is set up for on the phone. By default mine was set to the slowest baud. Increasing it to the maximum did speed up synchs a lot - but it's still pretty slow.

Bassey: Have you sussed how to get recurring appointments from Outlook to the phone?

My biggest hassle with the synch software is the loss of categories.

No. The only ones you can get are those that Outlook derives from the Contacts. i.e. If you enter a date of birth or anniversary for a contact in Outlook then Outlook will automatically create recurring all-day events in your Outlook calendar for each of them. If you then synch to the P900, you can use any of several programs to extract that same information from the contacts list and create those appointments in your P900's calendar.

HandyDates, DateMate, SmartBirthdays to name but three.

I got the same problems - super slow sync process - I have to use a force full sync to make sure my outlook is not compromised and on top of that on my phone it still sychronizes my outlook events to the wrong time zones on the phone (+7 hrs) even after resetting everything (even my frigging toaster - who knows maybe there is a connection from my toaster to my phone that causes the trouble) 😮
