File Sizes In N-GAGE...

7 replies · 3,186 views · Started 10 August 2004

HI,

can anyone(who has used N-GAGE before) tell me wat are the max file sizes supported by N-gage classic for the following:

java games,mmc,symbian games,mp3,video files.

yesterday I read in a blog where some N-gage owner was regretting buying N-gage saying

"
The mp3 player only holds 2 songs and it sounds 'tinny' when its played. The video option is terrible and it can hold very very small files - i.e. 126kb

"
Is it true? does mp3 really sound bad on n-gage?. wat does he mean by video option. even if I am having a 128 mb mmc card in the phone and transferred a 6mb mp3 and 18 mb video file. Will I be able to play them???

or was he talking about the file size limitation for over-the-air-download of such files. Does N-gage too possess (small) file limitation like in samsumg phones?

please help!!! :icon13:

What blogger was that?

The N-Gage QD doesn't have stereo sound or the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) that the N-Gage "classic" has, so its sound generation facilities are poorer.

The "classic" sounds good to me (especially with a stereo headset).

It can play as many MP3's as you can fit on a memory card (officially supports 128MB memory cards, but people have used bigger; 256MB, 512MB and I've seen one person using a 1GB card, too). If MP3 tracks average, say, approximately 4MB each, you can calculate how many MP3's you can fit on a given size MMC by yourself.

The N-Gage ("classic"😉 has about 10MB of free dynamic RAM after it has booted up, so it can run apps (Java or native Symbian apps close to that size, but they're generally all much, much smaller).

People have converted full, feature-length movies to be viewed on the N-Gage, so size is not a problem there either.

I'm not sure if the Messaging app has any limit for MMS size per se, but phone manufacturers and operators/carriers (and principally MMS messaging center software manufacturers) live by a document called the "MMS Conformance Document", which defines the MMS formats and max supported sizes.

The version of the doc that I have (from 2002) says the max MMS size with guaranteed interoperability is 30KB.

However, I have sent messages much larger than that with the N-Gage "classic" (and other phones). Also, a local operator that I know says they support up to 500KB MMS.

There are, to my knowledge, no (browser-based) downloading size limitations either (as long as the file fits in device memory, and you can afford to pay for it...).

This guy clearly doesn't have a clue; ignore him. "Over-the-air," the N-Gage and the N-Gage QD can download up to around 800kb before the "Services"/"Web" application will crack the s€#¥s, although it may be less, depending on your network's configuration. If you download content to a computer however, and then transfer it to your game deck or Multimedia Memory Card (MMC), the only limitation is the available space on your game deck or MMC... Many people have downloaded full, feature-length movies and/or entire CD collections to their game decks with no problems! In regards to the MP3 player, I've found that MP3 files playback with surprisingly good quality and sound great through both the speaker OR the included headset. What's the video like? Great and with the right settings, you can even playback videos at almost VHS (video cassette) quality (with a bit of tweaking, you may be able to squeeze even better quality out of the N-Gage/N-Gage QD)! Finally, the N-Gage and the N-Gage QD officially support MMCs up to 512MB, although many people claim to have used MMCs up to 1GB in size!

Yeah, the N-Gage QD doesn't support stereo audio output, so if you download a third-party MP3 player, it's not gonna sound all that great... But that's why the (original) N-Gage is still available- if you want a quality MP3 player, buy the original N-Gage and if not, buy the new N-Gage QD! N/A, both the N-Gage and the N-Gage QD have 4MB (NOT 10MB) of "shared" memory available, with aprox. 3.4MB available to the user out-of-the-box (ie. Before deleting the built-in content); among other things, this is used as RAM for the game deck. Java/Symbian games and applications LARGER than this CAN be run (although it's VERY rare to see a Java application of such a large size), as long as they're stored on an MMC. The "Messaging" application will let you create multimedia messages up to around 100kb in size, although at this stage, most phones can't recieve multimedia messages larger than 50-65kb (all Symbian, Palm OS and Windows Mobile phones can recieve such large multimedia messages though).

thx..a lot . I just purchased My N-GAGE yesterday and when I saw that blog just after one hour I became a little panicky. I have a terrible experience with samsung phone with file size limitations. WELL N/A said that after booting it has 10 mB dyanamic RAm surely NO jave game or app. will pose a problem and as for downloading whole movies on N-gage is really terrific I didn't know about that.

May be that blog guy didn't install any MMC card in it 😉 and was using 4mb shared memory for all that.

THX...

If you use the Opera browser you can download files OTA (over the air) as large as your external (MMC) memory allows. I've downloaded files as big as 20MB using Opera.

Not true. What N/A was talking about was RAM - as in the memory used to run apps (same as PC RAM) which is 16MB in the N-Gage, with about 10-11MB free/available to the user.

What you are talking about is internal Flash memory (storage memory, NOT RAM) which indeed is 4MB, with about 3.4MB available to the user.

I didn't bother to mention Opera because I thought he was specifically asking about the Services/Web application. In regards to the 16MB of RAM, my N-Gage QD has an extra drive ("G"😉 that my N-Gage doesn't have... Would that be the RAM you guys are talking about? Oh yeah, the "G" drive I mentioned above is 17.31MB, not 16MB!

Dynamic RAM (DRAM) is not visible as a drive at all (just like on a PC or most any other computer).
