Unable to browse thru Opera in 3660.

6 replies · 2,158 views · Started 10 August 2004

I downloaded the Opera trial version to my Nokia 3660 today (Tuesday). Though GPRS gets activated when Opera connects, I am unable to connect to ANY web page. I get the message something like 'server not found' etc.

But there is no problem when I use the default browser in the mobile. Why is it so? What is the problem?

HI
I faced the same problem too. However when I contacted My service provider they said That the gateway will only allow access to wap sites only and that too using a wap browser. opera uses SSR to reformat ordinary webpages to fit in to your screen. Contact ur service provider for info.

Ya.. that is wat I was saying. I too use gprs and when I contacted my service provider he said that the gateway will allow access to wap content only. however I can view ordinary webpages but that too using a wap browser. not by xhtml browser or any other. opera surely is not a wap browser and does not send its identification as a wap content browser . Then after I tried a java app. called webviewer which enables u to view normal webpages thru gprs when I run it It is able to initialise my gprs connection but cannot download any normal webpage. surely the gateway is blocking it. As for infrared or pc no idea boss.

Opera needs to be configured to use a GPRS Internet Access Point (WAP Access Point settings will not work). That is, you need the Internet Access Point settings from your operator/carrier/service provider (or whatever you wish to call them), and then you need a subscription that also allows you to use it.

I solved this problem today.

There are two types of GPRS connections offered by my operator (Hutch - India).

One is HutchWorld, a plain vanila GPRS, which allows only browsing thru the mobile. Opera cannot be used with this service.

There is another GPRS service called 'HutchWWW', which is more expensive costing Rs 500 per month (Rs 47 = $1). This allows browing the Net thru laptops, PDAs etc via the mobile using infrared or bluetooth. This version of GPRS connection allows use of Opera. May be this is what comes with Internet Access Point settings.

I switched to this connection today, and I am able to use Opera.

HEY thanx buddy I too use HUTCH-india (hutchworld) gprs. Now I know wat the prob. was. Well that 500 RS. really sucks If they charge on prepaid balance also after paying the montly rental. I think I am better off on wap and can always use (MAGISTR) If I ever need to sign forms on normal webpages thru wap browser.

By the way please tell me is surfing ,downloading free IF I pay them 500 rs. per month or they charge on prepaid balance equally.

How's the connection speed on HutchWWW???
