mp3 as ringtone????

18 replies · 11,333 views · Started 11 August 2004

hey guys, how do I make an mp3 play as a ringtone.

I assume I'll have to convert the mp3 to a midi file?? If this is correct, how do I do this, what program/s should I use??

I am also looking for an answer to this question. Additionally, I have some sounds I would like to use for Message alerts.

I'm no music expert by far, but I do know that you can't convert MP3 files to MIDI reliably. MIDI is a format that describes sounds of instruments.

A MIDI file is more like instructions what sounds to play and for how long for MIDI instruments implemented in software or hardware or both).

No converter can reliably detect what instruments are playing simultaneously in a music track played by an orchestra and map those to actual notes/tones and MIDI instruments.

And MIDI can't reproduce non-instrumental sounds (like humans talking, singing, etc.) at all.

You can convert MP3's to other comparable sound formats like WAV or AAC, though.

Easiest way to make your own ring- / message tones is using OggVorbis; this, assuming that you have the older firmware (3.42.sumthin). If this is the case, you just install the controller (free, .sis-install file) after which your phone will recognize .ogg files automatically. Of course you want to make your tones a littlebit smaller than full length songs and to do this you should convert them to a lower bitrate and mono (and maybe cut them up a bit too..); I'm sure that there's lots of info of that already, here in the forum. search for 'ogg'.

Another way of going about it, is conversion to a wav format which the phone understands. Instructions to that are on a sticky thread at the top.

ps. I recently converted all my wav tones to ogg which cut the file size to ~1/3! previously my 45s. long ringtones were ~350k in size and as an .ogg they're around ~100k - with no noticable difference in quality :]

How do you check the firmware version on your phone???

Shouldn't there be a systemwide .mp3 codec that will make the 6600 recognize mp3's. Then the phone would automatically play .mp3's as ringtones. yes? or are there other snags?

To determine your firmware, key in:

*#0000#

as if you were making a phone call. As P.Enroth said, the OggVorbisController only works with v3.42.1

There is a free (beta?) application called HelixPlayer which recognizes mp3 (and more). Once installed, it becomes your default media player. Link:

so if you install that, can you use .mp3's as your ringtones?

No, but you can at least listen to mp3s and save them to the MMC.
For ringtones, my advice would be to convert the mp3 to .ogg. The ovcontroller lets you use .ogg files as if they were .wav or midi files.

thx

aha so it's the ovcontroller that i need to hound. so if i talk to my programming people, they can design an update that gives the same functionality to .mp3's as it does to .ogg?!?

make minscule progress...

downloaded .mp3 to .ogg converter...

picked files (3) to convert...

converted files...

put on mmc via card reader...

checked for files in file mngr....

went to profiles to change ringtone...

no files!!!!

so is there something else i need to install?

Here's the ovcontroller file.
AFAIK it only works with firmware 3.42.1
Install it on your phone. It will embed. Any .ogg files sent via BlueTooth/IR will open automatically with 'Recorder'. Once saved to MMC/phone memory, they can then be selected as ringtones. The ones you transferred via card reader should be selectable, as they can now be recognized, but I can't be 100% certain since I've never used a card reader.
Please let me know if this is the case.
