Using the 3620 as a modem (BT, IR, OS X and Palm 5)

I just got a 3620 through AT&T, and i'm trying to get it to work as a modem
via bluetooth through OS X and via IR using Palm OS 5. All the searches that i've been doing are concerned with using the GPRS network through these connection methods, which i have gotten to work with the Palm, although i haven't tried the bluetooth yet. What i'm more interested in doing is using the phone to dial up to a regular PPP connection that i get from the university, since it's going to be cheaper to pay for airtime than for data traffic during the hours that I would be using it.

Previously, with a sony ericsson t300 through T-Mobile, i was able to do this using the palm over IR, but what's happening now is that the phone claims to be dialing for a little while, and then disconnects with a NO CARRIER message on the computer. Using ZTerm on the Mac, i tried connecting to a voice line this way, just to see if it was actually dialing, and the line i was calling to didn't even ring, although i was able to spit Hayes commands to the phone and get OKs or various messages from ATI commands.
Does anybody have any insights on this at all?

(i've tried good ol' ATZ init as well as AT&FE0V1&D2&S0&C1S0=0+IFC=3,1
which i lifted from the modem script that i got from that one website that everybody always sends people to for OS X modem scripts. I'm connecting to the phone through raw BT as if it was a serial port.)

Thanks!
