Text Message - Contacts Not Recognised

6 replies · 3,723 views · Started 28 August 2004

I have recently purchased a Nokia 6600 from o2. I am having a problem whereby when i receive a text message from someone in my contacts list, the name doesn't appear, just the phone number. I have read forums where they say if you have the number in the phone twice it doesn't recognise it, but this is not the case here.

Even if I delete the contact from the contacts list, add it again from the text message screen (options->add to contacts->create new) if I get a text from them again occasionally the name comes up, other times it won't.

This is confusing i know. Will a complete reset then manually entering the phone numbers solve the problem?

any ideas or help appreciated!!

It can also be because the phone does not always associate numbers with international dailing codes (in the sms) with contacts with national dialling codes, the usual way we type our numbers into our contacts list, try going through and adding the international dialing code to your contacts.
If this is not the problems then I am not sure, but it helped me.

Yeah I tried that. Some people it makes a difference, other people it doesn't. It really is completely random!

There is a thread in here somewhere that states that only the last 7 digits of a phone number are used for caller id..(type the last 7 numbers of any of your phone numbers and you will see the name of contact displayed,of course it wont connect coz you havn't typed the complete number.

So it may be that the problem contacts have the same last 7 digits (major coincidence mind)???????????????????

I've tried a combination of having the contact on the phone memory, or on the sim, no change. I did a soft reset of the phone yesterday and ever since it's been ok but then it does go through stages of being alright. it recognises the names in sent messages, and when the person rings. Looks to be a common problem though as this post has been on most forums i've looked at, but everyones reply is always "add +44" or whatever international code. This doesn't seem to make any difference!!

Just to update-

I backed up all my data using the Nokia PCSuite (contacts, messages, settings etc). I then did a full factory reset using the code shown on this board (sorry can't remeber what it was!).

Turned the phone on and Restored my contacts and message data from the PCSuite application. Ever since I have had no problems with the text messages recognising contact details. Strange but it seems to have sorted the problem. Hope this helps anyone else but I must say that this worked for me, may not work for anyone else, and make sure you have a good backup of your data first!
