Pencil button as a shortcut

I was curious of there was any way to make the pencil button (on the left hand side under the green talk button) a shortcut to open something (like a new text mesage or something). Currently in the phone mode it does nothing.

Is this possible?

Yeah maybe to turn the keypad backlight off to conserve battery. 😃
