Or boot in safe mode. That'll limit the apps in the background.

you're supposed to hold the pen key while starting up the phone... but even in the hundreds of times i've tried to start my phone in safe mode, it never worked (i had an error called "App. Closed - Startup" and the warning was supp. to stop when the phone boots in safe mode, but it never did - had to reformat it). You could use Psiloc Flight Mode - which startups the phone without a sim card and you can access the applications except the sim related ones, thus much more RAM
Or may be you can use the SLauncher and the charger thing to free up more RAM on your phone - k just tried it on my phone, it didnt work, so i dont recommend it.
