Wanted: a device to do what i want

5 replies · 1,823 views · Started 14 September 2004

And I'm not 100% sure that any symbian device does all this, but any comments, suggestions, rants, offers to sell a device that does just this, or insults are welcome.

Required Features

  • Memory card for file storage/transfer between multiple PCs(SD/MMC would be best). Wireless access to the files on the device.
  • Sync with PC, in some kind of wireless way
  • Small Size. This will not be used as an input device (except for voice memos, see below), so the keypad can be small or nearly unusable. I actually don't care if it's not a phone, but I am looking at phones because PDA's are generally too big.
  • Voice Memos, preferably able to be recorded onto memory card. Ideally these would be saved as files and could be transfered to the PC as mp3 or wav files. Prefer to be able to give them text titles/file names.
  • Contacts. One or two hundred would be sufficient, but I would like to sync them with the PC into the file format I like (rather than being forced to store them in Microsoft Outlook). Also, I would use the PC as the primary input device, so a two way sync is important. The ability to store the same contacts on two PCs, and to use the phone to tranfer between them would be nice too (ie: i enter the contact on one PC, transfer to the phone, go to work and can transfer the contact to my work PC)
  • Text notes/todo list. Entered on the PC, sync to multiple PCs, and able to be read on the phone. Would be quite nice to have a moderately large storage space, so I can store memos.
  • An odd idea that may not work, but would be quite nice if possible. Direct access to the files on the memory card, wirelessly (bluetooth??) from the PC. This way, I can store ssh keys on the phone, and whenever I get within 20 feet of either of my PC's, the PC can use the keys. Of course it is 100% necessary that when the phone goes away from the PC the file is not accessable any longer. Is this possible, or just wishful thinking?
  • Less Important: Picture storage/viewing. I don't keep pictures of my family in my wallet (they get beat up). Since I would always have this with me, I could store a few pictures, and show them to people, just like people do with wallets. Don't need a camera, just a viewer.
  • Less Important: E-book reading/storing. Obviously these would need to be stored on the memory card, due to space.
  • Nice, but not critical. Like I said before a small PDA-ish devices that does all of the above would be cool. It doesn't have to be a phone. BUT if it can be a phone, I would like a <$10/month calling plan. What providers in the US provide something like this? I'll use it very little as a phone (I currently have no phone, and am usually at a desk anyway), don't need any data plan or anything like that, but for $10 a month, I would do it. Problem is, best deal I've been able to find is like $30, and that's a bit too much.

So, I am I crazy? Or does something like this exist?

Thank you all,

Would I be able to do the ssh key thing? Any documentation on that part of it?

I don't think the SSH key thing can be done ATM,unless you persuade some smart developer to do it 😉
