Is it G with or without the box?

I've setup my device to use it always, since our network supports it.
the "G" icon appears everytime the GPRS connection it's available
the boxed G icon just appears when sending emails or browsing a website.
I believe that the G itself just means that, "available" and does not means any extra cost while in standbye

it's just the G w/ slash n w/o a box, appearing in the antenna icon.it appears everytime i make or have a call or send or receive sms.pls help just bought my phone last sat., i dont know much about this phone.

As CasperVD & Kamalayan have just explained:

The G on its own means that GPRS is available but not being used.
The G with a box round it means that GPRS is in use.
The G with a slash through it means that GPRS is available but cannot be used at the present time because (for example) you are sending or receiving an SMS.

So the only time to have concern is when you see the G with a box round it!
