PIM vs Serial port

HI a newbie who owned a p800 and need it to do a project. Need the phone to communicate with a PC then communicate with a server.

question here:
I cant get the serial port work? -- answer is unsure cos the serial port status says not connected but later on synchronization starts. once that is done, i can use my P800 icon on pc and add images to the folders. But when i try to send eg an image from phone to pc, it searches for bt then return no result?! so i cant send anything.

If choose not to connect serial port, i can send files like images or wave but it indicates that i was using the PIM service. What is PIM? used for data transfer like the serial port?
